Publisher's Summary

In this prequel to Practical Magic, we meet the Aunts: sisters Frances and Jet, and Vincent, their brother. Their mother, Susanna, knew they were unique: pale, red-haired Franny, who could commune with birds; shy, beautiful Jet, who knows what others are thinking; and charismatic Vincent, built for trouble.

Susanna sets some rules of magic: no walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles and absolutely no books about magic. But, desperate to uncover who they really are, the Owens siblings head down a life-altering course, filled with secrets and truths, devastation and joy, and magic and love.

Too sad

Too sad for a fairy tale. Almost everybody died in the story and for those who lived are lonely are missing the dead ones. So depressing

Good story, unfortunate reader

I liked the book, but was not keen on the narrator. I found the delivery awkward at times, particularly the “voices” put on, especially those of the young child characters at the end.

Great story narration jarring

Good overall story however unlike with other books in the series it was difficult to like or engage with the characters due to the narrators very odd way of interpreting their stories. Vincent who is supposed to be beautiful and dreamy comes across as whiney and unlikeable. As for Frany her voice is whiney and unpleasant. Not sure why the narrator chose to use such over the top and almost pantomime like voice for the characters.

Overall a good story and set in a time of change in the United States and in the city of New York but just hard to full escape to this due to jarring narration.

It was okay for a Prequel

I haven't read Practical Magic (seen the film tho) yet and this is the prequel to this. Firstly, I listened to this on Audible. To be honest the narration really put me off and there were times when I almost gave up on this book because of it (my sincere apologies to the Narrator I mean you no disrespect). Why do genders have to be voiced in that particular gender? It was putting me off hearing the male characters being voiced in a falsetto tone of voice. As for the story I didn't really get into it until half way through. I still intend reading Practical Magic, or rather listen to it on Audible, but I hope it's not the same Narrator.

Lovely

The story is lovely and makes you reflect on the things that are important in life.
The narration however was interrupted by the constant voice impressions which were distracting and not necessary.
The narrator has a naturally soothing voice so I think her natural delivery would have been preferable.

great story not so great narrator

The story is wonderful, nothing fast paced or anything but a beautiful story of two sisters. If you like Practical Magic, you will like this.

Unfortunately, the narrator was not my favourite. Her voice for narrating the actual story was a very pleasant one, but most of the character voices were absolutely dreadful. The male voices all sounded the same and BAD! Fran, who is a great character had a voice like finger nails on a blackboard. It did sometimes take me out of the moment through sheer irritation.

But all in all, worth it for a magical story!

Please don’t use this narrator again!!

The story I would have enjoyed if the Narrator had not been so awful! The voices she put on were so annoying. I was pleased when the parents were killed off just so I didn’t have to listen to the dad’s voice again but more even more irritating ones followed!!! A real shame as the story was quite good and I love the film Practical Magic so was looking forward to this one. Think I’ll be reading book 2 on kindle though!

Banal and dull

I couldn't finish this book. I think it's only for those who are romantics at heart, but two thirds of the way through I am thoroughly bored with it. I guess it's essentially about love and loss with some magical stuff sprinkled around. Not for me.

It was ok

With the other Practical Magic books I've been immediately immersed by the story, with this one I just couldnt seem to get into it, not sure why.

To be honest it didn't feel like it added much to the overall story of the Owens family. I suppose, there wasn't the high drama we see in the other books. Just fairly regular lives with ups and downs and loss and love. It was ok

Great narration, interesting story

Overall very enjoyable. Well narrated - I could easily tell which character was speaking without being told. Interesting story with lots of characters I came to care about.

Very average and disjointed.

Boring and disjointed. Story lines didn't make any sense. Book about bad things happening.

A magical start

A beautiful story of love, family & being happy. It tells the story of the Owens siblings Jet, Franny & Vincent from when they are little up into old age & the dealings they have with trying to unsuccessfully avoid love due to the family curse & learn to be & love who they really are. There is no big build up to a climax but Alice Hoffman weaves a beautiful tale of magic, loss, love & family. I read Practical Magic years ago, & now can't wait to reread it after reading where it it all started.

enjoyed

I enjoyed this book, didn't like the boy/man voices sounded a bit weird when the characters would change to a different gender. other than that a nice book for a rainy afternoon
