Publisher's Summary

John Newton, Charles Simeon, and William Wilberforce suffered lifelong opposition and endured for the causes of gospel truth, missionary zeal, and political justice. They found, in solid doctrine and humble joy, the tough roots for habitual tenderness in response to their adversaries - without doctrinal or moral flinching. They are examples of remarkable grace.

In the third book of the Swans Are Not Silent series, best-selling author John Piper looks at the lives of these three great men and focuses on how they not only endured great opposition but did so with joy and without bitterness. Their lives exemplify how to set a pace and finish the race before us, encouraging every heart that it is possible to jump the hurdles in our paths.

Incredible testimonies of endurance

I was challenged by the way in which John Newton, Charles Simeon and William Wilberforce endured and struggled for decades in their lives and respective ministries/careers. I realized that I give up too quickly and am too quick to doubt the work or call of God based on difficulty. The stories of these mens' lives are powerful and impactful.

Powerful tools to help in your journey of endurance

It was the title of the book, more than anything else, that initially attracted me to this book. So, it was a wonderful surprise when Mr Piper used the lives of some of the heroes of faith to illustrate what these men held onto to endure as they journeyed in their call and purpose. Truly inspiring, but it is my heartfelt prayer that the lessons learned from their lives will be engraved on my heart and that I too, will walk in faith and endurance too. Thank you to both the author and narrator for being about this powerful book!

Excellent subjects

The author couldn't have chosen finer men as subjects for his exploration of perseverance. I had to pause while listening to the section about John Newton. I had to tell my sister what he said about talking to an adversary. She loved it so much that she wanted me to send the quote to her. What a kind and gentle soul he was! If you're looking for a book that inspires you to be a better, kinder person, this is it.
