Publisher's summary

John Newton, Charles Simeon, and William Wilberforce suffered lifelong opposition and endured for the causes of gospel truth, missionary zeal, and political justice. They found, in solid doctrine and humble joy, the tough roots for habitual tenderness in response to their adversaries - without doctrinal or moral flinching. They are examples of remarkable grace.

In the third book of the Swans Are Not Silent series, best-selling author John Piper looks at the lives of these three great men and focuses on how they not only endured great opposition but did so with joy and without bitterness. Their lives exemplify how to set a pace and finish the race before us, encouraging every heart that it is possible to jump the hurdles in our paths.

Wonderfully Eye Opening

I loved this book, it was well written and executed. I am now anticipating listening to the remaining books in this series. I learned so much and have been inspired by the message.

A great message!

This was a great message from John Piper on the need to endure and the practical applications of how to endure.
This is the type of teaching that we need in this time that we are currently living in. A voice for living through the valleys and the difficult times that we will undoubtedly live through.

Incredible testimonies of endurance

I was challenged by the way in which John Newton, Charles Simeon and William Wilberforce endured and struggled for decades in their lives and respective ministries/careers. I realized that I give up too quickly and am too quick to doubt the work or call of God based on difficulty. The stories of these mens' lives are powerful and impactful.

Excellent

I have really enjoyed this series. The stories of such great men is inspiring. You see the comparison between great men and the vapid shell of people we call great today. It also reminds me that no life is without struggle. My faith is tried as it was with these men. But I like they, can overcome. Thanks to Pastor Piper for collecting these stories I would not have known otherwise.

The Great Lives of Men before us

This book is a wonderful biography of some of the greatest theological minds ever to walk this earth. Many of the stores shared here are inspirational and a push for the believer to never give up the faith that all these men had.

Exhilarating

Great book! Well written! However, I don’t understand how the narrator can read this book with absolutely no hint of enthusiasm.

Good for its purpose

Piper did a great job examining the histories of these 3 men. As he has done in his other books in this series. The 3 men showed a great deal of endurance through some harsh struggles. However, very little of that type of struggling is comparable to most of the laymen. W. Wilberforth, suffered over 40/50 years to achieve his goal. Most of us can’t look at our lives and say “I have diligently pursued a God-centered goal for that last 40/50 years which has finally born fruit that affects the nation or the world at large.” However, his was my favorite story. Compared to other books, I had a hard time picking this one back up to finish more than twice. Thus, I rated the story lower.

Excellent subjects

The author couldn't have chosen finer men as subjects for his exploration of perseverance. I had to pause while listening to the section about John Newton. I had to tell my sister what he said about talking to an adversary. She loved it so much that she wanted me to send the quote to her. What a kind and gentle soul he was! If you're looking for a book that inspires you to be a better, kinder person, this is it.
