Though it took some time to settle into his new life in Gravigna, Italy, following the death of his wife, former NYPD detective Nico Doyle has figured out a thing or two. The locals have not only welcomed him, but are giving him rave reviews on his cooking, and his budding relationship with Nelli, a local woman, is healing old wounds.

When Nico receives a phone call before dawn, he wants to ignore it. A phone call at that time can only mean trouble. Sure enough, it’s Perillo of the local carabinieri. A woman has been found dead in her home, and the sole witness speaks only English. Nico reluctantly agrees to help Perillo with the case.

Judging by the crime scene, Perillo and Nico determine foul play, and they don’t have to look long for suspects. Following the death of her husband, the late Signora Nora had taken on a number of lovers, her two daughters weren’t on the best terms with her, and there’s a lot to be gained from the sale of her residence.

Nico and Perillo have their hands full as they try to solve the murder and restore peace to the otherwise sleepy Gravigna.

“Most enjoyable. The Road to Murder takes the reader to Tuscany, where the scenery, the culture, and the food of that most beautiful part of Italy are as important as the main protagonists. Join the American expat detective as he solves this latest mystery. Warning: reading this will make you hungry.”—T. A. Williams, author of the Armstrong and Oscar murder mysteries

The narrator reads the words but doesn’t tell a story. He barely pauses for punctuation. Sometimes, I can’t tell who is speaking. Very frustrating.

Good story but

The narrator’s odd inflections were irksome. Do enjoy the further character/relationship development. Perhaps listening is not the best way to enjoy this book.

Busy plot!

I really enjoy this series but the performance is honestly horrible. A narrator can make or break a book for me and this one is not strong.

Love the characters

I have never listened to a worse narrator. His flat voice and run on dialogue sometimes made it difficult to even know who was speaking. What a terrible way to portray one of my favorite cultures, the Italians. Finally, I am sick to death of authors making every man in their stories Beta.....even a former NY detective. It has truly become boring.

Perillo needs ex-homicide cop Nico to help him with the murder of a wealthy landowner who best witness only speaks English. The victim's family is something else, but there are as many suspects as there are twists and surprises. Meanwhile, a local man who is their friend becomes ill and love is in the air for several couples.
Widowed ex-NYPD homicide detective (Nico) moves to Tuscany where he has good memories and his wife's family (and they need his help in the restaurant). Remember the adage about taking the man out of the job? He got to be friends with the local Carabinieri (Perillo and Daniele) over a murder and has made many other friends as well including a dog, OneWag/Rocco.
I requested but missed out on a free temporary EARC from via NetGalley, but preordered the audio (available 5 March 2024) to read and add to my series collection. Voice actor Danny Deferrari did a remarkable job EXCEPT that he needs to know that the item is JEWEL-ry and not an ethnic word.
