Publisher's summary

Scott Drew, head basketball coach of the NCAA National Championship-winning Baylor Bears, rebuilt a program mired in scandal by instilling a culture of putting Jesus first. The Road to J.O.Y. is packed with leadership and coaching lessons that can equip any leader to make their team a championship team.

When Drew accepted the head coaching position at Baylor in 2003, the job was arguably the worst in all of college sports. The men’s basketball team had been disgraced by scandal: one player murdered a teammate, and the head coach who lied about the details tried to conceal illegal cash payments to his players, including a false allegation that the murdered player had been dealing drugs. It was an unprecedented story and a national embarrassment. Still, Coach Drew had a confident vision of what the program could be, even in the face of such adversity, and he guided his team to the pinnacle of success—Baylor’s first National Championship—while leading with, and living out, his faith.

The Road to J.O.Y. shares:

  • Biblical principles that have helped Coach Scott Drew lead well through challenging times
  • An insider’s look at the others-first culture that spurred Baylor’s rebound
  • Coach’s wisdom for investing in others and creating a successful organization
  • The leadership lessons Drew has learned from growing up in a famous basketball family and years of coaching
  • How faith is the foundation for everything Drew does

With equal parts inspirational memoir and personal and professional growth, The Road to J.O.Y. is perfect for anyone who is looking to better live out their faith, lead a team, achieve a goal, or mentor others.

Nice guys and humble kids can finish first

A fascinating chronology of the trials and tribulations of Baylor Basketball and a young, dynamic and hopeful young coach. It was an easy listen - I had conveniently forgotten how challenging and situation was. May God continue to bless the team, the university and the coaches. Lessons to live by. SicEm guys

The Most Important Coaching Book I've Ever Read

If you're rebuilding a program from the ashes, this is the perfect book. If you're a Christian coach at public school hoping that you can bring Christ to your students, this is the perfect book. This is about running a ministry through basketball and it's an amazing rags to riches story showing how God can bring glory when you focus on him through the ups and downs.

Such a Great Book!!

I absolutely adore Scott Drew and love Baylor Basketball!! The Season of Joy National Championship run was one for the record books! The narrator did a great gob; however, I’m not going to lie…. I was looking forward to hearing Scott Drew’s enthusiasm and was hoping he would narrate the production. If for. I thing else… to hear the name Baylor pronounced correctly and not ‘Beylor’ (proud alum!). Would recommend this one to everybody needing an inspirational read. #sicemBears

Amazing even for non-basketball people

I loved the reading, but more importantly I loved the heart of the book. Basketball is just an excuse to talk about God. Jesus is a main character, Baylor university’s Journey it’s just a window through which we can witness his heart for the broken.

Excellent book and encouraging story

I loved this book. Being a sports guy and currently as a head 8th grade basketball coach, it has helped me keep the proper perspective as I influence young men, but it has also given me lessons and principles for everyday life.
