There is a generosity crisis in North America. The number of individuals giving to charity is on the decline. For nonprofits that rely on the generosity of everyday individuals, this is an alarming statistic. But amidst these challenges, a new opportunity has arisen: the subscription economy has transformed donor behavior and preferences, making recurring giving more accessible than at any other time in history.
Dave Raley, with over twenty years of experience in the nonprofit sector, has studied top-performing nonprofits that are successfully tapping into this new kind of giving. As individuals and organizations have embraced subscriptions, consumer trends have changed, and donors are more likely to give on a recurring basis to nonprofits of all types and sizes. This has paved the way for subscription giving, and ultimately, more reliable revenue that can accelerate generosity.
In The Rise of Sustainable Giving, Raley shares the core elements of building a thriving sustainable giving program, including:
- Six key shifts driven by the subscription economy
- Understanding donor motivation
- Crafting an ongoing value proposition
- Getting your technology stack right
- Designing and launching your program
- Growing your program
Sustainable giving is more than just inspirational jargon or a lofty idea; it’s a tactical playbook for a new era of fundraising.

©2025 Dave Raley (P)2025 One AudiobooksDave does an excellent job reframing how we think about generosity—not as a series of one-off campaigns or emotional spikes, but as a long-term, relational movement. The central idea of building systems that foster durable, recurring generosity instead of chasing short-term wins feels both practical and forward-thinking. He blends research, real-world case studies, and clear frameworks in a way that makes the concepts easy to apply.
What I appreciated most was how actionable it is. This isn’t theoretical. Each chapter builds logically on the previous one, moving from mindset to model to measurable strategy. The sections on donor retention, subscription-style giving, and creating frictionless experiences were especially strong. You can tell he has deep experience in the nonprofit space, but the principles are transferable well beyond that sector.
The narration on Audible is excellent—clear, engaging, and easy to follow at 1.25x (which is where I tend to live). It made the data-heavy portions feel accessible without losing depth.
If you care about long-term impact—whether in nonprofits, church leadership, or any mission-driven organization—this is absolutely worth your time. Five stars without hesitation.
