A Dusty Tomes Audio Book
In Cooperation with Spoken Realms
The Rise of American Civilization by Charles A. Beard and Mary R. Beard. In two volumes. Volume One: The Agricultural Era. The MacMillan Company 1927.
Narrated by Joseph Tabler
Note: This book is ‘read as written'. It was published in 1927. It is in the public domain.
Narrator’s note: Published as a very large book … perhaps to show how special it is, and it is that!! I was tempted to split it into two books per volume, but decided to present it as originally published.
Charles A. Beard, a proponent of the “New History", which emphasized the importance of cultural economic developments as opposed to just warfare and diplomacy.
“… synthesizing the political, economic and cultural elements in our history from the colonial days to the present … with such mastery of material, such discrimination in judgment, such vigor and charm of style as characterize Professor and Mrs. Beard’s volumes is a contribution to American historiography which can only be fitly described as epochal.
… it would be invidious to emphasize a few inevitable infelicities and a few slips in proof-reading in a work of such magnificence of conception and skill in execution. The Beards have tackled a most difficult task and achieved it with brilliant success. They have set a new standard in the writing of American history and have put every student of the institutions, the civilization, and the culture of our Republic deeply in their debt.”—David S. Muzzey (Political Science Quarterly, Vol. 42, No. 3 (Sep. 1927), pp. 431–436. Published by: Oxford University Press)
Contents:
I. England’s Colonial Secret
II. Laying The Structural Base of the Thirteen Colonies
III. The Growth of Economic and Political Power
IV. Provincial America
V. The Clash of Metropolis and Colony
VI. Independence and Civil Conflict
VI. Populism and Reaction
VII. The Rise of National Parties
IX. Agricultural Imperialism and the Balance of Power
X. The Young Republic

XII. Jacksonian Democracy—A Triumphant Farmer Labor Party
XII. Westward to the Pacific

Dusty Tomes Audio Books are public domain books retrieved from history. If today’s technology had been available when first printed, they would be audio books already. I am grateful for the opportunity to record them now. Read online at archive.org
Narrator’s Note: I read only as written. These old books were once solid sellers for bookmen of their time. I believe they can shed light on their times and ours. I love obscure and remote literature, they are a distinct pleasure for me to read to you. These turn out to be distant and unknown only so long as they remain unread or unheard. Aloha.

Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

Story
The history of the tablets translated in the following book is strange and beyond the belief of modern scientists. Their antiquity is stupendous, dating back some 36,000 years. The writer is Thoth, an Atlantean Priest-King, who founded a colony in ancient Egypt after the sinking of the mother country. He was the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, erroneously attributed to Cheops. In it he incorporated his knowledge of the ancient wisdom and also securely secreted records and instruments of ancient Atlantis.

The history of the Boston Tea Party is a hidden one. Why? Since it was a clandestine operation, all sorts of rumors and legends grew up around the event—many collected decades after the American Revolution had ended. At its core, however, the night of December 16, 1773, when colonials dumped tea from British ships into Boston Harbor, was more than a fight over tea and taxes. It was a struggle over the very nature of democracy and self-governance.

In a Mexico City mansion on October 23, 1789, Don Joaquin Dongo and ten of his employees were brutally murdered by three killers armed with machetes. Investigators worked tirelessly to find the perpetrators, who were publicly executed two weeks later. Labelled the "crime of the century," these events and their aftermath have intrigued writers of fiction and nonfiction for over two centuries. Using a range of sources, Nicole von Germeten recreates a paper trail of Enlightenment-era greed and savagery, and highlights how the violence of the Mexican judiciary echoed the acts of the murderers.

He said he supported free-market democracy and civil rights. But the Putin of those years is unrecognisable today. In the second half of the tenth century, Byzantium embarked on a series of spectacular conquests. By the early eleventh century, the empire was the most powerful state in the Mediterranean. Yet this imperial project came to a crashing collapse fifty years later, when political disunity, fiscal mismanagement, and defeat at the hands of the Seljuks and the Normans brought an end to Byzantine hegemony. By 1081, Byzantium's very existence was threatened.

Alfani argues that the position of the rich and super-rich in Western society has always been intrinsically fragile; their very presence has inspired social unease. In the Middle Ages, an excessive accumulation of wealth was considered sinful; the rich were expected not to appear to be wealthy. Eventually, the rich were deemed useful when they used their wealth to help their communities in times of crisis. Yet in the twenty-first century, the rich and the super-rich have been exceptionally reluctant to contribute to the common good in times of crisis.

The largest gathering of Union and Confederate veterans ever held was front-page news throughout the country. “[It] will be talked about and written about as long as the American people boast of the dauntless courage of Gettysburg,” declared a woman who accompanied her father to the reunion. Zionism is the political and cultural movement to establish Jewish self-determination in the Land of Israel. It is one of the most astonishingly successful national movements in history: not only did it establish a democratic state in a hostile region, but that state—Israel—became one of the most prosperous, innovative, and vibrant societies in the world.

We thought we knew the story of the twentieth century. For many in the West, after the two world conflicts and the long cold war, the verdict was clear: democratic values had prevailed over dictatorship. But if the twentieth century meant the triumph of liberalism, as many intellectuals proclaimed, why have the era's darker impulses—ethnic nationalism, racist violence, and populist authoritarianism—revived?

There is something profoundly romantic about lost civilizations. Davies peers through the cracks in the mainstream accounts of modern-day states to dazzle us with extraordinary stories of barely remembered pasts, and of the traces they left behind. This is Norman Davies at his best: sweeping narrative history packed with unexpected insights.
