Publisher's summary

At the end of the fourth year of the Crisis Era, Yun Tianming, riddled with cancer, chose to end his life. But death for Yun Tianming is merely the first step in a journey that will place him on the front line of a war that has raged since the beginning of time.

As Yun Tianming lay dying, his brain was extracted from his body, flash frozen, put aboard a spacecraft and launched on a trajectory to intercept the Trisolarian First Fleet. It was a desperate plan. But there was an infinitesimal chance that one day Tianming may, somehow, send valuable information back to Earth. And so he does. But not before he succumbed to subjective centuries of alien torture and betrayed humanity.

Rewarded with a cloned body by the Trisolarans, Tianming has spent millennia in exile as a traitor to the human race. But now he has a chance at redemption. A being calling itself The Spirit recruits him to help wage war against a foe that threatens the existence of the entire universe. But Tianming refuses to be a pawn again. He has his own plans....

worthy

yes, it's really worth reading this even though it's a form of fan fiction. The story is a good continuation and resolution to the original series. and ... the ending will have you laughing too. :)

Way worse than the original trilogy

This book was a convoluted mess, the writing is not great but especially the story just becomes totally chaotic, there are no rules, the book tries to wrap up all the loose ends of the original trilogy but only succeeds in creating a total mess. I really hated it

A-mazing addition to the series!

Loved every second of it. ties a lot of thing together and meshes magnificently with the original series! Ah, the closure is liberating.

Dull

This fan fiction story starts really well and the first third tidies up the three body trilogy quite nicely, but then it goes off on an incomprehensible tangent, exploring theoretical possibilities governing the structure, history and future of the universe in great depth via tedious conversations between non-human life forms... unfortunately this is irrepressibly dull and two hours from the end I finally gave up.

Rubbish

Absolute nonsense fanfiction which detracts from the original trilogy. Do not buy, not worth it at all.

Amazing additional to one of the best scifi series ever

Truly a worthy expansion to the universe of the Three-Body Problem. I hope the author keeps it up. I listened to whole audiobook at literally one go. Couldn't stop. Highly recommended.

it's clear that it is a fanfiction

It wasn't the intention of the author to get published as part of the Canon. For a fanfiction, it is a good one, and quite creative. But as a published book, there are a lot of issues. The mains one for me are : 1) too much exposition. The dialogues are mostly exposition dumps that feel unnatural. 2) the themes of the original trilogy are not respected. In this book, you have literal chosen ones and super beings, while the original books were about how groups of people making decisions are affecting the whole universe and how a single person decision doesn't have that much of an impact. 3) the female characters are completely under developed and always sexualised. I had the same issues with the 2 last books from the trilogy, but in this one it is even worse. It seems that the only thing that a female character is capable of thinking is how much she is in love with the lead man. They are so boring and useless. And everytime the author needs to provide some comments about the physical appearance of each female character (human or otherwise). It is even more daunting when it is narrated by a middle aged man. I was so done by the end of the book!

Epic Story

A great book and audiobook! I've really enjoyed this story. I like how it fills the gaps and improves on the previous works. Glad I didn't skipped it. I had a bad experience with prequels from the Dune universe and thought this book might disappoint. It did not, GJ !

A true Fan Fiction

I liked this book, but it’s not a continuation of three body problem, rather a dream of a possibility and something completely different.
I’d recommend the book but would advise that if you are expecting a continuation of three body you might be disappointed or not.

a great little addition.

even though I think the trilogy has a good ending already and leaves much open to imagination, this fan book does tie it all off very nicely. it's been added to my head-canon. i really loved the ending.

didn't really like the references to other bits of sci-fi and mythology though, I feel like the author was trying too hard there (restaurant at the end of the universe? really?).
overall however, well worth the credit.

This is NOT a prequel to the 3 body trilogy!!!

WARNING: Do not read this fan fiction before you have read all three volumes of "The Three Body" problem by Cixin Liu as it is FULL of spoilers and will detract from your enjoyment of the 3 body series.

The book itself is set in the same Universe but the events are inserted into the 3 body timeline before, during and after the events of the trilogy. As it is advertised as a prequel and appeared on Audible before the final 3 body volume I listened to it after listening to books 1 and 2 of the trilogy = there seemed to be a lot of non-sequiturs and sudden. shifts in events and characters and I then realised one needs to have read volume 3 before starting this book. I estimate the false advertising reduced my eventual enjoyment of volume three by around 30%..

That gripe out of the way, this book is a good listen/read and supplements the original trilogy without too much distortion of Cixin Liu's original story and I would recommend it as a fourth volume of the story. I do wonder what would happen in Cixin Liu were to want to write a fourth volume himself, having had his intellectual property impinged upon by what is actually fan fiction. Apparently Liu did not object to the publication of Baoshu's continuation of the story, so I guess he never had any intention of developing this Story Universe any further.

pretty good

fairly good.. Downside is the Mary Sue subscribe
syndrome of fan fiction. The characters become a bit too perfect and the love events a bit too cute and syrupy

Nice hit of Three Body world that answers some interesting questions.

When I finish the trilogy, I was hungry for more disappointed that the author had not written a fourth book. When I found this bit of fanfiction, I was dubious as to the quality, but it’s actually pretty good and narrated by the same person that read the other books goes along way to make it sound in the same voice. It closes off some loops and flashes out the story of the end of the universe, and the survivors, which is great and brings closure letting you down more gently than the end of deaths end. Highly recommended.

So much better than I expected.

I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing this novel as it does not share the same author as the original trilogy. Thankfully I chose to give it a go as Baoshu has masterfully created a text that closely follows the style of the original trilogy while expressing his own style. Finally, this novel does a fantastic job of addressing unexplored aspects of the original while leaving enough for the reader to ponder. If you have read the original trilogy, this comes highly recommended.

Worthy sequel to the great trilogy

Fill in plot holes from the trilogy and allow me to enjoy great characters such as Yun Tienming once more.

I can't say I can imagine the 4th dimensional being or 2nd dimensional being, or how the Master looks like in the Membranes, but I like the story line and particularly enjoy the ending, such a great ending idea for the series.

A perfect dip back in the Amazing universe

I definitely sat on the fence with this one wondering if it could possibly live up to the original series that I thought was the best science fiction I've read. You know the characters are stilled and the plot sometimes meandering but who else can make you see fourth dimensional space, make a ship out of strong-interaction force, and take you to the end of time?

So can this live up to that? I was very pleasantly surprised by how good this was. It extended on the series and gave a satisfying conclusion to some of the secondary characters. If you loved the original and want to get transported back to that universe I recommend you take the plunge and give this fan fiction a go.

A few interesting interpretations

Some interesting ideas and interpretations of the original series, but the more it veers into it's own original ideas, themes and writing style the worse it gets. Explores some tired and common scifi ideas. Never seeks to add anything truly original without tying it directly to fanfare for original trilogy. You can feel the style is very different from Liu's.
