Editorial reviews

Popular, award-winning narrator Fred Berman uses his animated, boyish tenor to great effect in this audiobook about a quick-killing, hard-loving cowhand on the run from an angry town. Duane Braddock hopes to start a new life at the Bar T Ranch with his fiancée, but two men, armed with the knowledge about his escape from Titusville, don't plan to make it easy for him. Duane's life becomes even more complicated when he unexpectedly falls in love with another woman.

Berman uses pace and vocal urgency to build up the feeling of suspense as Duane attempts to clear up the mess he's gotten himself into.

Publisher's summary

He killed before he could shoot, kissed before he could love, won before he could lose. He was too green to live, too lucky to die. He was a natural, born to be a legend. The Reckoning. Running from an angry town, Duane Braddock takes a job as a cowhand at the Bar T Ranch hoping to settle down. But two things stand in the way: the son of a neighboring rancher who wants him dead and a ruthless Army officer who wants his fiancée. Duane could have handled these two men if they hadn’t found out why he’d left Titusville. And if he hadn’t fallen in love with another woman, things would have worked out okay. But now Braddock’s reputation as the quick-killing, hard-loving kid is on the line – just one wrong move and he’s dead.

Good Story Excellent Narration

The story was real, adult and entertaining. The narrator was the best I have heard. Makes every character come to life. Ending seemed abrupt.

Unexpected ending.

The end came abruptly. We sat there waiting for the finish, but the finish had already played. We also liked the characters. The descriptions made them real. This is our first book by Len Levinson and we are looking forward to his next book.

Wow!

Loving this story and author. Narrator is truly engrossing. Maybe it's something to do with the consonants "LL?" But seriously, I can't wait to read/listen to the rest of this series!

Hooked on this series

I never really read westerns, while searching books narrated by Fred Berman I found Len's books. Now I'm turning into a fan. Warning ⚠ once you start these books it'll be hard to stop

The Forsaken!

We find Duane Braddock, aka The Pecos Kid hiring on at the Bar-T run by Big Al Thorton. Braddock’s fiancé, Vanessa Fontaine was also looking for a job in nearby Shelby. Vanessa was hired as the Shelby School Marm. Meanwhile, back at the Bar-T, Braddock got a good look at Phillis, Big Al’s daughter, and got to thinking that she was awful pretty and more his age. This smells like trouble in the making, but it wasn’t Braddock that smelled. The next day was time to go to work for both of them. Vanessa was reminiscing about the woman she was and how she got where she is. Braddock was trying to fit in with the new crew and making enemies while he was at it. An Army Company rode into town led by Lt. Clayton Dawes, planning on staying while hunting Commanches. The story continues in a whirlwind of upsets, betrayals, and more killings. For some reason, I was thinking that this volume would conclude the story but it came to an abrupt end. Researching, I find book three, Apache Moon. I must purchase this one to find out what happens.

Lucky in Love and gun fights.

An interesting story. A little too much romance novel for my taste. I'm more William Johnston novels. A lot more action less talking and romance.
