Publisher's summary

A delightfully straightforward and lyrical retelling of the ancient Indian epic of loyalty, betrayal, redemption, and insight into the true nature of life - one of history's most sacred ethical works, rendered with completeness and sterling accuracy for the modern listener.

Here is one of the world's most hallowed works of sacred literature, the grand, sweeping epic of the divine bowman and warrior Rama and his struggles with evil, power, duplicity, and avarice. The Ramayana is one of the foundations of world literature and one of humanity's most ancient and treasured ethical and spiritual works. Includes an introduction by scholar Michael Sternfeld.

The intricacies of Ramayana lost

Ramayana is not only about the story - which is how this book is presented. It is almost like the writers were on a mission to write the story and finished it it without any flavor or interpretation of their own. Ramayana has so many embedded stories, which have been eliminated completely. Also many of dialogues have been cut short or eliminated, so that they can move with the story. That is the point of Indian Epics - these small diversions are important as they highlight certain cultural, philosophical or historical significance (after all it is considered a Ithihasa).

Good Retelling and Narration

This is my second time reading this great religious epic of India. Several years ago, I read Krishna Dharma's version, but I like this version by Egenes & Reddy better. The language is contemporary, yet lyrical, and the narrative is highly readable, yet maintains the profundity of its allegorical and spiritual meanings.

Gupta has a rich and melodious voice, although it can be monotonous at times. She could be more emotive, and create more distinction between different character's voices. But overall, I liked her narration.

An excellent epic spoiled by worst narrator

Ramayana is an epic. It's one of the most wonderful simple epics that one can read. And one can listen to.
Sadly, the narrator here is toneless, without inflection and robotic.
There is no emotion or understanding of the story. It's as if the narrator was bored to death reading it and is trying to bore us to to death with her narration.
Worse narration. Avoid this narrator.

Ramayana by Deepti Gupta is the best!

I rarely listen to audiobooks. Ramayana was the first and also one and only audiobook that i finished listening. Deepti’s narrating fits so perfectly with the story, she made the whole story so beautiful and made it become alive. Her narrating was so clear, magical and poetic! It was my first audiobook on Audible, and I fell in luck love with it immediately. I even looked more about Deepti because I was so amazed by her narrating. I wish she can narrate for Mahabharat too! Ramayana has taught me a lot about Dharma and devotion, and I am really grateful for Deepti narrated it. THANK YOU for having such a beautiful audiobook. I will keep it forever!

Narrator has to get Sanskrit Pronunciations right

This is such a good Story but every time the Narrator (Deepti Gupta) tries to speak Sanskrit, i cringe. Her Sanskrit is an example of what it should not sound like!

I loved it! Up until the end that is :(

I'm an American, but I have been to India and love Bollywood films and such. I have heard references to this story before in many films so I decided to listen to it. I loved the story! Riiiight up until the very end with the "epilogue". I was very disappointed with what happens to Sita and Lakshmana in the end. I felt like the story sort of betrays itself in that way...

Inspiring story-guide to Dharma. Also provides

background for Dr. Tony Nader's "Ramayan in Human Physiology". Virtuous action has its roots in a virtuous mind. The relationship between higher states of consciousness and "right action that spontaneously arises from "right mindfulness" is clear in this epic story and, as research has shown, enlightenment is a neurophysiological state, taking this story further into Dr. Nader's work. The main characters' practice of yoga, "the complete settling of the activity of the mind" and other so-called "asceticism" in the Ramayana is that practice that allows higher states of consciousness to re-surface, that state of enlightenment that serves as the basis of error-free action that serves the individual and society well.

Excellent narration of Indian mythology

Its an excellent audiobook to own and listen to. I know ramayana since my childhood. But it worth listening to again. The narrator did a great job in depicting the events.

Wonderful

Everything about this is a blessing. Calming, inspiring, and transformative. Whatever time is spent in listening, blessings will come back ten fold.
