Publisher's summary

It has been two weeks, and now Ruby is totally alone. People weren’t prepared for the rain, got caught out in it, didn’t realise that you couldn’t drink water from the taps either. Even a drip of rain would infect your blood and eat you from the inside out. Ruby sets off on a journey that will take her the length of the country - surviving in the only way she knows how.

Critic reviews

"Distinctly British dystopian survival thriller. Great page turner, and I particularly enjoyed the very normal heroine." ( The Bookseller)
"Tense, scary, and high emotion, The Rain will have you on the edge of your seat and afraid to step outside." (dark-readers.com)

Apocalyptic without taking itself too seriously

I've loved these books since they came out. That being said, there were a few times where the audio would cut a few words out of the beginning of a paragraph, and that got confusing occasionally. Also, there are parts of this book that are really not great for audio, like the part where she's trying to call emergency services, and repeats endlessly, which is easier to skip on a page.

As for the story, it's brilliant and creative, but I do think Ruby excessively tangents, or repeats herself, or interrupts crucial parts of the story with unnecessary filler chatter. And, as far as characters go, she's really simple minded and not very bright-- even for a 15-year-old girl. Still, top notch book 💚

definitely worth it

this plot and world building had me on my toes all the way til the end. the end wasnt quite horror enough for me personally, considering the entire rest of the story reminds me of Junji Ito's comics. still wonderful and a great way to feel something during quarantine!

Narrated

Loved the story. Did not like the narrator. I think with a different narrator it would have made the story line even better.

Gripping, Real, not your average dystopian

Where does The Rain rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best. It wasn't so fantastical that you knew you were listening to a fictional book. It's in the form of girl's journal of events. It seemed all too real at times.

What did you like best about this story?

It seems so real, like it could happen. I was outside shoveling snow as I listened to the first hour, and found myself getting depressed and scared... In a good way!

What does Avita Jay bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The British Accent! for an American anyway.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Not your average dystopian"
