Publisher's summary

In the future, the world is at war. For the last decade, King Lazuli of the Eastern Empire has systematically taken over the world. No one knows much about him other than a series of impossible facts: he cannot die, he has not aged since the conflict began, and he wants to rule the world.

All Serenity Freeman has known is bloodshed. War has taken away her mother, her home, her safety. As the future emissary of the Western United Nations, the last autonomous region of the globe, she is responsible for forging alliances where she can.

Surrender is on the horizon. The king can taste it; Serenity feels it deep within her bones. There is no other option. Now the two must come face to face. For Serenity, that means confronting the man who's taken everything from her. For the king, it means meeting the one woman he can't conquer. But when they meet, something happens. Cruelty finds redemption.

Only in war, everything comes with a price. Especially love.

Love this Series

This series is amazing from start to finish. I love the readers and how they give a good description on the characters, looks and influential power of each individual. Will read and listen again and again.

Better than I expected

I really enjoyed this book. Narrator not so much. Her speech comes off very choppy. Looking forward to the next

Fantastic beginning!

Loved this! I really like reading books with kickass heroines and Serenity fit this role perfectly. She's a soldier fighting to right the wrongs done to her people, her family. She has a lot of hate towards the king and with good reason.

I loved how the king, Montez, wanted Serenity despite her hatred. Nothing she could do would push him away. I love that the king has a dark soul but still had the ability to treat Serenity like a treasure he would protect with everything within him.

I don't normally enjoy pushing away but I think having Montez's acceptance of her no matter how much she fought him made their verbal sparring exciting.

This is a very action packed story and yet the romance is very much the focus. While the king is a darker hero, I wouldn't say this is a very dark story. It does end on a cliffhanger.

I listened to the audiobook and would highly recommend it. Laurel Schroeder does a fantastic job of sucking you into Serenity's world and I didn't want it to end.

A True Queen

Amazing!

Mrs. Thalassa does it again. The world created hits too close to home with today’s current events, but the story line is draw dropping, keep you on the edge of your seat, begging for more.

Serenity is a soldier, not a beauty queen, though she is beautiful with all her scars. The twist of fate, the sad news even young love and life cannot escape war or the after effects.
King Lazuli a businessman, who found himself ruler of the world.
A play at Fate, tons of enemies, a world that needs more love, and hope.
Definitely recommend this series.

Give it a chance

The narrators voice is annoying at first as well as the Kings voice but just keep listening. You will be swept up in the story and narration

good story, terrible narrator

why didn't anyone tell the narrator that you can hear her breathe after each sentence, and her voice trails away in a very odd manner. I assume there was a producer that should have given her a heads up? The story itself is interesting, but I struggled to finish because of the speaker.

Good book!!!

When I read the excerpt of this book I was not sure I would like it but the tragedy and sacrifice that serenity endures is priceless. I’m looking forward to the next book.

Fast paced, engaging and keeps you hanging...

In a future world the world is at war. The Eastern Empire controls most of the planet with the Western United Nations being the last hold out. However surrender is in the air and Serenity is sent with her father to represent the WUN in peace talks. However the King of the Eastern Empire has other ideas... and Serenity is not sure how she feels about it all, as this is the man who caused her mother to be killed.

Fast paced listen, this New Adult book kept me engaged throughout. I enjoyed the world building and the tension between the main characters.

If you hate cliffhangers then avoid this book.
