Publisher's summary

There will be a battle, and you will need to protect your heart.

Kjell of Jeru had always known who he was. He'd never envied his brother or wanted to be king. He was the bastard son of the late King Zoltev and a servant girl, and the ignominy of his birth had never bothered him.

But there is more to a man than his parentage. More to a man than his blade, his size, or his skills, and all that Kjell once knew has shifted and changed. He is no longer simply Kjell of Jeru, a warrior defending the crown. Now he is a healer, one of the Gifted, and a man completely at odds with his power.

Called upon to rid the country of the last vestiges of the Volgar, Kjell stumbles upon a woman who has troubling glimpses of the future and no memory of the past. Armed with his unwanted gift and haunted by regret, Kjell becomes a reluctant savior, beset by old enemies and new expectations. With the woman by his side, Kjell embarks upon a journey where the greatest test may be finding the man she believes him to be.

Amy Harmon Weaves a Heart-Opening Tale (once again)

What a profound unfolding of a wise and deeply passionate tale, told by the perfect narrator. I didn’t want it to end. Would love there to be more in this series.

Actually excellent … surprised me!

This book is actually worth your time and attention … I chose it thru the Romance Package membership, thinking it would be one more juvenile, simplified, good-for-background-but-not-really-paying-attention audio …. not so at all! This book is dense with plotting, superb with realistic characters, spans multiple far flung locations (kingdoms) with different customs and forms of magic expression and use. There is "action" for those who like flashes of adrenalin, but not excessive, not gore-soaked, and actually appropriate to the plotline. I listened to this book without listening to the first, and it was definitely fine as a stand-alone.

Amy Harmon is an amazing story teller. I am a super picky reader and I loved this one! The narration is literally perfection. Steve West made the story come alive.

wow

I loved everything about this book and this series. I thought since this book focused on Kel instead of Lark that it would be a whole new story that wouldnt be as good as the first. Boy was I wrong. These characters have so many talents and so many layers. I cant believe so much story is written in such a small book. Blown away. Wish there was a 3rd audiobook.

Loving this series

I was doubtful about reading this series, but something pulled me to try the first book, and I feel in love. I love the story of the four who began the world, I live the gifts, I love the stories within this particular story, and most of all, I love the people in these stories perfectly not perfect. Fabulous narrator too!!

Absolutely brilliant!

I go through a books aggressively but occasionally I stumble across an unforgettable gem that I just want to read over and over again. This series is just so good! I loved the first book, and while this book was very different, it was still brilliant! The author has such a way with words, it really is like a melodious song being weaved as you read it. There are so many things I liked about this, Tirus and Kjell's strong friendship - the knowledge that they could be completely open and vulnerable with each other, Sorsha's endurance and how her strength shown through even when she had no memories, all the travel and adventure and meeting characters with different gifts, more Volgar battles, and a little conniving from Lady Thierry. Even though her ambition is what cost her replacing her father in Book 1, gotta give Lady Thierry credit for her focus and persistence. This book definitely focused more on the relationship between the main characters than Book 1, but I appreciate that it wasn't trite or shallow and that they had to deal with genuinely difficult and unpredictable situations. It would have been so easy to make Aaron out to be a villain but the choice not to added so much depth to the story.
Steve West also does and AMAZING job with the narration and was absolutely perfect for it!

Highly recommend for all lovers of YA fantasy.

This beautiful sequel to The Bird and the Sword tells the story of Kjell of Jeru, who was a minor but emerging character in the first book. Harmon's imagination is limitless and her interweaving of biblical stories into her fantasy world's mythology is seamless. She has created a breathtaking world, peopled it with unforgettable characters, presented them with nearly insurmountable odds and added all the feels. Highly recommend for all lovers of YA fantasy.
