Publisher's Summary

Marcelo Bielsa is one of football's greatest eccentrics and greatest enigmas. This is the first English biography of one of football's most contradictory characters. A definitive and comprehensive biography, from growing up in Argentina under a military dictatorship to reviving the stricken power of Leeds United.

Bielsa is described by Pep Guardiola as: 'the greatest football manager in the world'. To the Tottenham manager, Mauricio Pochettino, he is 'my footballing father, the reason I became a player, the reason I became a manager.'

Very good book

I always enjoyed soccer and the story of Marcelo Bielsa is a must read. He created the modern way to play soccer, ball possession and attacking. Very well read.

Good - Slightly short on insight

If you appreciate football or Marcelo, this is a good listen. He’s a fascinating character. Much of the book is a review of scores and games, which can be tedious. The parts that are about Marcelo as a person are compelling.

Either too long or not enough bBielss

I really thought always buying a book about marcello be Elsa, but this had way more soccer history involved that I'm not sure was necessary

A little cut and paste but a decent attempt

A serviceable biography of Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa is notoriously reluctant to give interviews so there are few insights into the man, the book largely restricted to a chronology of his career and comments from those who worked with him, most of which seem to come from previously published interviews and/or press conferences. Ending, as it does, mid way through the most recent, Covid-19 interrupted, season the book misses perhaps Bielsa’s greatest achievement to date, taking Leeds United back to the English Premier League after 16 years in the wilderness. I suspect a revised edition soon.

The narrator reads in a bouncy, jaunty style which occasionally does not suit the material. He also sometimes mispronounces names and lacks consistency - the French cup is ‘Coup de France’ but Ligue 1 (Un) is ‘league one’ - but generally easy to listen to.

Some Jarring Pronunciations

But that’s often the way in football books. A few errors in reading where what the narrator says is actually the exact opposite of what the original text says. Overall well worth a read. Note that it pretty much finishes at the beginning of Bielsa’s second season at Leeds and doesn’t cover the promotion season or subsequent Prem seasons.

Good but a battle.

Good book overall but dragged on. Filled in spaces with irrelevant info at times.
