Publisher's summary

Keep your head down. Do what you're told. It's easier that way.

Walter Lawrence Baucom is used to the troops that patrol Agrarian District 89. He grew up with the sight of Chinese and Russian soldiers, right alongside the American ones. They are the Coalition. "The Three Brothers", they call themselves. They claim that they are there to help. And he thinks that if he doesn't rock the boat, then they will never have a reason to break in his door and disappear him, like they did to his brother.

But when a Chinese captain is kidnapped by resistance members, Walter is suddenly thrust into a fight he never wanted. A fight where there are many sides, but very few allies. As things in District 89 quickly spiral out of control and the borders are closed by Coalition troops, Walter will have to make a decision: What is he willing to fight for?

His life? His freedom?

His family?

D.J. Moles does it again.

What made the experience of listening to The Purge of District 89 the most enjoyable?

D.J. Molles proves once again what a great storyteller he is. His themes tend to be post apocalyptic and although not entirely political, they do make you compare his stories to potential scenarios in our future based on current political trends and this is very thought provoking.

What did you like best about this story?

There are no cliches or redundant plot devices. This story, like all of his stories, keep you moving along, anticipating the next development. His characters, although heroic, are also vulnerable and aware of their own shortcomings. This makes the story, although fictional and based on a future we have not yet arrived at, very real.

What does Christian Rummel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

In spite of his very distinctive, deep baritone voice, Christian Rummel has the ability to bring so many characters to life with a variety of voices from small children to young and old men and women.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The epiphany of the protagonist's realization that he had been living a lie his entire life until that defining moment when everything changed for him and he realized that he had to go to war against a corrupt system.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend any of D.J. Molles' books to those who enjoy action packed, post apocalyptic themed narratives.

A great story, definitely not a YA dystopia tale.

I quickly fell into this world and the convincing narration by Christian Rummel brought it to life. I binge listened to the three books in the series over the course of a couple of days and it made the yard work almost a joy.

Great story and excellent narration!

I couldn't stop listening D.J. Molles is very descriptive in his writing and Christian Rummel brings it all together with his Narration. I am a huge fan of typical s.h.t.f. novel's and this was a good break from that genre.

The Purge of District 89 is a look into dystopian future reminiscent of the Hunger Games series but with a feel of 1984 by George Orwell. You won't be disappointed!

Good but..

I've been a huge fan of both D.J. Molles and Christian Rummel since first listening to The Remaining when it showed up on Audible. A book I consider one of my favorites, one which lead me to read most of his other work as well as this book. That said..
This book sadly doesn't hold a candle to The Remaining. This book really lacks in character development and world building among other things that made The Remaining amazing. In its place we get a lot of inner monologue that explains very little and usually consists of the same set of phrases said repeatedly.. followed by a 2-3 minute rambling explanation about said phrases. Again this wouldn't be so bad if it weren't so overused in place of actual content. Will I continue to read the series? Probably, but I won't continue to unless the second book really improves. There is only so much a person can put themselves through.

Great book!

The book was very great but compared the author’s Lee Harden series, it doesn’t have the same excitement and story drive as they did. Still good!

Beautiful narration

I absolutely love Christian Rummel's narration. The near-future dystopian story fits into a genre but is unique enough to make it enjoyable and new. I'll listen to the next in the series after trying this one out.

Great book

Loved this book, it will be on my repeat listen list. The worst part about the book is that I have to wait for the next one.
