Gripping, well written, but too dark for me

Generally love this author, and this was as gripping as usual, but this one was just a little too dark for me. I kept listening but SPOILER ALERT it kept spiraling darker and the protagonist was just too psychologically messed up for me to enjoy the story. I prefer a story with a main character I like. I felt for her and cared what happened to her but I didn’t like her. That being said, if you don’t care about a happy ending you might like this. This author is extremely talented at writing the inner thought life of very complicated characters.

Nuanced, brilliant, different

What a beautifully written book. I love the story as a whole but the observations and anecdotes set out by the author were the sparkles on the champagne bottle! Wow! Really great.

The end was a bit weird but it was an interesting book to say the least

STRANGE CLUTTER OF NOTES, UTIMATELY, DISAPPOINTING

The first few chapters had my attention but required going back to listen again to some parts until I figured out we were hearing excerpts from journals and notes from the characters lives that kept jumping around in time and perspective. Still I stuck it out because I just knew the author must have some amazingly interesting story to tell that would tie it all together in some way that I couldn't fathom. Turns out - not really. I don't want to give away anything, but the second time Pipa mentions Mrs. Danvers in her "private journal" I knew who that "surprise" character would turn out to be. I hoped I was wrong and that's what kept me listening. Or, I hoped that there was some mistaken identity theme soon to be revealed. There wasn't. This is just a strange, strange story. I'm actually a bit concerned for the author, S. E. Lynes because this sort of warped interpretation of love had to have come from someone who has experienced some terribly marred relationships.

Not my favorite

I love the way S E Lynes writes and Tamsin Kennard narrates her books so well, however this story wasn’t as good as some of her others.

unique approach to storytelling

I have read and loved several psychological thrillers and this is the most unique approach to the story. I am giving this high rating not so much for the story itself, but because of how it was delivered to the reader.

Different in a good way!

This book is different then all the others but in a good way, I loved it!!

Mrs. Danvers! Complexellent! Devious!

A perfect pair, S.E. Lynes and Tamsin Kennard again combine their top-notch abilities to bring forward a strangely humorous and conniving psychological thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual plot, filled with danger, along with a rollercoaster of tangled emotions. How do they do it? I’ve never been disappointed by these marvelously talented two women. Most worthy of a credit. May we have another please?

It was Okay.

The beginning and the end of this book were the best parts. The middle dragged! The only reason I continued listening was because the narrator was excellent!!!
