Publisher's summary

In The Unwritten Words series, Christopher Nuttall's story-telling mastery weaves a new epic which follows on from his best-selling Bookworm series and is set in that same world.

In The Promised Lie, the first book of the new series, five years have passed since the earth-shattering events of Bookworm IV. The Golden City has fallen. The Grand Sorcerer and Court Wizards are dead. The Empire they ruled is nothing more than a memory, a golden age lost in the civil wars as kings and princes battle for supremacy. And only a handful of trained magicians remain alive.

Isabella Majuro, Lady Sorceress, is little more than a mercenary, fighting for money in a desperate bid to escape her past. But when Prince Reginald of Andalusia plots the invasion of the Summer Isle, Isabella finds herself dragged into a war against strange magics from before....

And an ancient mystery that may spell the end of the human race.

Disappointing

Having really enjoyed most other books by Chris Nuttal, this one was a disappointment. There was way too much palace intrigue, and too little action for my taste. The schooled in magic series was much more enjoyable.

Please stop stupid. Keep bringing the GREAT on!

5 very sparely awarded stars for Excellency!
[I do not awarded 5 stars unless it blows me out of the water. 4 stars is for good but not knock your socks off. 3 stars is enh, not enough energy to return it. And anything less goes back!

If you like School of Magic and Nuttall's other people-based (as opposed to his Space stories, yuch) snap this up and enjoy. It's a bit complicated for YA but a blockbuster for those of us who like involved plots and well-described people. (Don't you feel happier when an author bothers to get you involved and caring about what happens to her characters? )

First, this is his first series that I've adored since School of Magic. Same reaction as always when a new book in my genres; my eyes light up, my whole body shivers, I reach for my "One touch" (then I wonder if I have enough credits.....buy more of not enough), and I buy it as soon as possible. THEN I read it as quickly as possible.

Beautiful Transition!

First off the narrator's voice is still grating at the beginning, but you eventually get used to it. It is, after all, the narrative of the main character.
The main character (MC) has jumped to the future about 11 years from the last book. The author back fills those throughout the story. For those readers that have been following the adventures in magic and the MC have to gird their loins and prepare for the transition. It is an adventurous exciting tale with a novel pause in the end that leaves you anxious for the next installment.
Sometimes I wish I had waited for all the books in the series to be out before starting the read. Arrrrg!
