In this sequel to One Step Toward Divinity, Alex Talos wants a break. He volunteered his services to become the Holy Protector to eat, not because he understood or respected the responsibilities of the job. After an exhausting month of traveling around his island and fighting against three fantastical creatures that he didn't think could possibly exist, he needs rest.

Unfortunately, as Alex and his companions enter a quaint hamlet, one nameless sorcerer appears and burns the town to its foundations with only a thought and a snap of his fingers. They barely escape with their lives, but while Alex wants to run away from the challenge, the de facto leader of their group is angry and ready to face their new enemy head-on. Can Alex stay focused enough to fight through his struggles while his views are challenged and his depression deepens, or will he also succumb to the sorcerer's flames?
