Story
Our confidence is what gets us through life. It’s our helmets, life jackets, seatbelts, and mouthguards. Seeing your child battle with low self-esteem and self-doubt is not easy, and your first inclination might be to lock them in a bubble and shield them from the harsh realities of life. But taking that approach will undoubtedly do them more harm than good.

Publisher's Summary
“The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.” (Denis Waitley)
You want the best for your child, it’s true, and you might think that “the best” is gifting them with material things that will only bring momentary happiness. For those of you who can’t afford to do so, you see yourselves as failing parents.
The truth is, what saves our children and what saves a family are the things that can’t be bought, but can only be taught, learned, and practiced.
The Positive Child was authored with every parent in mind - whether well-off or struggling, new or seasoned - for those who think they’ve got this parenting thing in the bag, and for those who have no idea what they’re doing.
Jessica Palmer, mother of four, wants to help you build a healthy, happy, positive home by starting with you. Your attitude, your ideals, your beliefs. It's not the lifestyle that you can or can’t afford for your child that will morph them into phenomenal adults, it’s how you live and what you practice in the home.
In this enlightening audiobook, Jessica shares a bucketload of sagacious tips and tricks on how to cultivate healthy, positive behaviors in kids, using guiding principles such as:
- Becoming your child’s best example
- Respecting your child’s space and life decisions
- Empowering instead of shaming
- Encouraging creativity and independent definitions
- Teaching emotional intelligence
- Setting high expectations
- Practicing family rituals
- Building meaningful relationships
Do you really want to give your child the best life? The life they truly deserve? The life that will shape them into determinedly successful adults? Then, this is where you start.

Practical parenting advice
Initially I have to say- I am almost always turned off by books that say “if you do this YOU WILL be happy - YOU WILL have happy kids etc” no formula works for all kids. There are outliers and special circumstances.... Also not all children thrive on being pushed- but some definitely need it! I have read many many parenting books and I’m grateful to be able to take bits and pieces from each to add to my knowledge and skill set as a parent. That said I actually really liked this book. A lot of practical (and sometimes obvious) advice. Perhaps it is because I have 5 kids of my own and they are 17 and under so we have already adopted so many of these things into our own home. I think this would be an especially good book for new parents or parents with young children! I really appreciated the posts about helping a child understand *how to earn money and why *counting blessings and understanding how much they have *importance of incorporating family traditions. I received this audiobook for free in exchange for my honest review.

Good, but Not Perfect
I received this book in exchange for my honest and voluntary review. This book has great tips for creating and fostering happiness in your own life, in order to be the best role model you can for your child. Most of the tips are very practical and can be implemented immediately into your life. While I do agree that doing your best to be a positive role model is important, and will definitely help foster a good relationship with your child, I think the idea that if you are happy your child will be happy is overreaching. Children do not automatically emulate their parents' personalities even in the best circumstance, but that is especially not true for any children that are prone to anxiety or have other mental health challenges. Many of the tips in this book are helpful, but some of the advice needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Many children will not respond well to being pushed into activities or relationships as suggested, and it can actually be harmful for some children to try. Overall I have mixed feelings about the advice, and would highly suggest you consider the needs of your own child(children) and yourself before implementing the advice. Also it is ok and normal not to be perfectly happy all the time or to struggle with some relationships in your life. Yes, you should work toward the goal of happiness and positive relationships, but not having that all the time will not doom your child to a life of unhappiness as the author seems to imply.

An excellent book, especially the PDF
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. As parents that didn't have a lot of positive examples of parenting in our own life, my wife and I have tried to not repeat the "mistakes" we feel our parents did. That has proven to yield mixed results in our own child. We are truly blessed and he is a great kid, but he acts out like any child does. After going through this book, I honestly wish I had something like this when he was still a baby. I think we could have avoided many of the issues we've encountered on our own. The narration is well done. I didn't notice any real problems with the audio, but I feel I got much more out of the PDF than I did from listening. Either way, definitely worth picking up!
