As high achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough. But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the more effort it takes to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat”, we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.

Boring and bizarre
The first 4 chapters may be interesting to psychiatrists and other medical doctors, but for lay-people, it was just plain boring. Then the 5th chapter got super weird at the end…switching from a highly scientific view of things to random, opinionated statements like “marijuana should be abolished to avoid the depressive effects.” There was no elaboration nor substantiation of this claim. The (mis)information in the 5th chapter calls into question the validity of the rest of the chapters. I’d steer clear of this book!

Story
The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It begins at the brain stem, travels down the neck, and then throughout the body. Its main function is to allow our brains to not only monitor our bodies and how they are functioning, but also to receive information from the rest of our body. The vagus nerve is responsible for many different functions in the body.
