Publisher's Summary

“A great read and a fascinating retelling of a long-forgotten murder, that still resonates to this very day...for anybody interested in the history of the Silk City!” (Mark S. Auerbach, City Historian, Passaic, New Jersey)

At the dawn of the 20th century, the social unrest in Paterson, New Jersey was palpable. Thousands of Dutch and Italian immigrants flocked to the city, hoping for a job in Paterson’s famous silk mills. The burgeoning population ushered women into the workplace, grew suffragist sympathies, and produced an anarchist movement.

In this charged environment, Jennie Bosschieter, a 17-year-old Dutch immigrant and mill worker, was murdered. Sorrow turned to shock when four wealthy, influential citizens were accused of killing her. The resulting criminal trial held the city - and eventually the nation - transfixed.

Loved this book!

I really enjoyed the perspective of each character and how their interactions and decisions tie them back to the main character, Jennie Bosschieter. While this book was published in 2019, knowing that Kimberly could not have predicted the most recent social and highly visible unrest our country would endured, while living through this world wide pandemic, the outcome of this horrific true crime caught me off guard.

I immediately saw parallels to my own experiences and therefore assumed these men living in at the beginning of the 1900’s would either not be punished or barely. I’ll end with … Judge Dixon.

Horrible narration

The storyline was ok and a murder that I had never heard about. But the narration was atrocious. The tone of voice and was hard to listen to and the emphasis always seemed to be on the wrong words. I did listen to the entire book but will not purchase any other books narrated by Doug Greene. I implore the listener to listen to the entire sample narration before buying to see if you can handle Greene’s style.
