But when one of his inventions unintentionally threatens to bring chaos to the idyllic-yet-passive society he must rethink his plan and face his piratical roots.

Victor Bevine performs this story with bravado, drawing listeners into the mysterious universe and highlighting its action and drama. Murray Leinser has made many additions to the sci-fi genre and this one specifically asks the question "What are the costs of Utopia?"

Space piracy has never been like this. Lampooning 1960 with zingers that strike home 65 years later, Leinster gives us the tale of Hodden, a simple lad whose humble desires to be universally admired, fabulously wealthy, and married to a delightful girl, are met with sad resistance from the techno-utopia of Walden that he's made his adopted home. Bevine's seamless reading and clean characters carry us along as Hodden is framed for murder and, in sailing with absurd tidiness from one splendid, convenient catastrophe into the next, finds himself forced to revert - even with mere stunners - to the simple commercial traditions of his birth planet.

Arrrr. Raiding and plunder. Absolutely first-rate mind candy, this, sweet but not too filling. Think 'Blake Edwards in space.'
