Publisher's summary

When the NUMA crew is exposed to a dangerous toxin, Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala will stop at nothing to find a cure foretold by Ancient Egyptian lore in this exhilarting novel from the number one New York Times best-selling series.

Head of NUMA special assignments, Kurt Austin and his most trusted friend, Joe Zavala tangle with a ruthless powerbroker scheming to build a new Egyptian empire as glorious as those of the Pharaohs. Part of their adversary's plan rests on the manipulation of a newly discovered aquifer beneath the Sahara, but an even more devastating weapon at his disposal may threaten the entire world: A plant extract known as the black mist, discovered in the City of the Dead and rumored to have the power to take life from the living and restore it to the dead.

With the balance of power in Africa and Europe on the verge of tipping, Kurt, Joe, and the rest of the NUMA team will have to fight to discover the truth behind the legends - but to do that, they have to confront in person the greatest legend of them all: Osiris, the ruler of the Egyptian underworld.

Critic reviews

"Electrifying...Cussler delivers all the usual twists and turns on the way to the explosive climax." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Cussler's latest is the most breathtakingly suspenseful, wildly inventive, enjoyable thriller in the NUMA Files series to date! Hard-core fans will snap it up" ( Library Journal)
"Cussler's action-packed, fun-filled 11th NUMA Files adventure provides a deserted volcanic-island lair, tricked-out ships, diving exploits, and plenty of thugs and minions to give Kurt Austin a few problems, to say nothing of a beautiful woman scientist." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Pretty Darn Good book

As usual Cussler & Brown's books are filled with mystery right up until the end & I usually want to hear the last 4 or 5 chapters again just so i get everything srtaight. Of course Scott Brick is one of the best narrators (in my opinion) so there is no mystery to why i enjoyed this book so much. A person does have to pay attention or they will miss an exciting turn of events that keep coming. Highly recommend.

Bubble gum book

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Develop the characters above a comic book level

Would you recommend The Pharaoh's Secret to your friends? Why or why not?

no. I read it as I walked in the morning. Found myself laughing a few times at some of the lines.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Scott is excellent. I enjoy his narrative. He makes the novel work.

Did The Pharaoh's Secret inspire you to do anything?

Avoid future Cussler books. I enjoyed the ones from years ago. He is now selling his name to other authors as he makes a brand. Not the way to do good books.

Any additional comments?

I call this bubble gum book for the simple reason that you read it, finish it and remember nothing from it or discuss it with anyone. Like a stick of bubble gum.

Good, but hokey/contrived, action thriller!

Cussler has other series that I like more than NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) Files, especially the Isaac Bell series and DIrk Pitt series. Nevertheless, this book, his newest release in the NUMA Files series, is a worthwhile listen. The "black mist" idea strikes me as a bit hokey. Scott Brick's narration is better than the novel.

Scott is the best reader so far that I have found in all of the series I ma working on them all. My job has me doing a lot of hours driving and they make the drive time go by so fast

Cussler is always entertaining...

Any additional comments?

This is the first audio book I've listened to by Clive Cussler, but remember the Dirk Pitt series fondly. As always, Cussler delivers wild and crazy chase scenes, horrible deaths and impossible escapes.

It's an easy listen.

I hesitated to purchase this book a bit because of the narrator. In another series I listened to, Mr. Brick had an inflection to his voice that was too sepulchral.

In this book there was no gloomy, moaning narration. Thank goodness.

Total Waste of a Credit

The worst book I ever downloaded. Listened for 4 hours but could not take any further abuse. Laughable accents and poor research on the technology related to seismic surveys and probably everything else. Audible needs to consider negative starts for books like this. I will be asking for a new credit on this one. Only the 2nd time in 3 or 4 years.
