Publisher's summary

Browsing an antiques shop in Wiltshire, Alison Bannister stumbles across a delicate old portrait - identified as the doomed Tudor queen Anne Boleyn. Except Alison knows better. The subject is Mary Seymour, the daughter of Katherine Parr, who was taken to Wolf Hall in 1557 and presumed dead after going missing as a child. And Alison knows this because she, too, lived at Wolf Hall and knew Mary...more than 400 years ago.

The painting of Mary is more than just a beautiful object for Alison - it holds the key to her past life, the unlocking of the mystery surrounding Mary’s disappearance and how Alison can get back to her own time. To when she and Mary were childhood enemies yet shared a pact that now, finally, must be fulfilled, no matter the cost.

Best-selling author of House of Shadows, Nicola Cornick offers a provocative alternate history of rivals, secrets, and danger, set in a time when a woman’s destiny was determined by the politics of men and luck of birth. A spellbinding tale for fans of Kate Morton, Philippa Gregory, and Barbara Erskine.

Terrific time travel story!

Don't worry about the physics of time travel. Engage with the main characters as they sort out the puzzle that crosses the centuries. This story draws you into their lives and you feel their emotions.

Surprising twist . Is even better 2nd time!

Slow to start, but hang in there it is a good story with some twists. She goes back and forth in time so you have to keep up but it is like having two stories. And the narrators have the perfect calm voices which some nights put me to sleep with their peaceful voices but i guess thats why i have listened to it at least ten times!

Engaging

I had never heard of this author, but the book popped up In my recommendations and as part of the audible plus, so I looked into it. Time travel and Tudor history? Sounds perfect. This is a delightfully well written story with a familiar setting that I love. The history is well researched and the characters decently fleshed out. There are a few plot holes, but not big enough to annoy. All in all, a lovely escapist read. Would definitely recommend.

Time Travel at its Best!!!

Time travel fascinates me -- and this book was incredible!!! The characters and the narration were excellent -- I couldn't wait to get to the car every day to listen -- I was so sad when I finished this book! Then -- to find this was a series - and this book was not the first -- I will definitely pursue the other books in the series!

The Phantom Tree

I haven’t rated a book with 5 stars in a very long time, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I will say the one thing I was disappointed in was that it wasn’t long enough! I wanted more story and less explanation, I guess. I thought it was the perfect blend of history and modern, and I really loved the narrators. The young woman who did Allison was particularly excellent!
It reminded me strongly of Posession, where the story jumps from modern day to historical times and the characters follow each other. I enjoyed the mysterious parts as well. The Allison and Diana story line was especially strange and hair raising.
The romance was a little cliche, but this was where the narrators really brought life to their characters and were able to move me past the corniness a bit. I honestly am not sure I would’ve liked this book as much as I do if I had read it as opposed to listened to it.
I highly recommend this book if you enjoy history with a little mystery, romance and modern day storylines all rolled into one!

the phantom tree

good. had trouble knowing which character the chapter was suppose to be about unless it said so and then could be difficult as all the voices sounded the same for each character.
