Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Lauren Russell often wondered why her father had been so adamant about teaching her skills that most other fathers wouldn't even consider teaching their daughters. Ever since she was little, she had been taught how to live and survive outdoors, and how to use firearms to protect herself and those around her. Some of the training had been a bit extreme. Or had it been? Many of her questions were answered the day the world as she knew it ended.

Konkoly is a great addition to the genre
I really enjoyed Jakarta Pandemic, so jumped on this audio book as soon as it came out. I'm glad he's continuing the story of the same family.
Good pacing, solid writing, interesting scenarios. The writing is straightforward, and perhaps a little too much, but it gets the job done.
Agree with so many other reviewers---the cliffhanger ending really catches you up! Ouch! Can't wait to hear more of the story.

GREAT Beginning but no middle or ending!!!
Any additional comments?
What ever happened to THE NOVEL where you had a beginning ,middle and end? I can't believe that it was allowed to be produced as an entire book.I feel very cheated and definitely not worth the money.
However I do love the story line but will think twice about spending so much money for a third of a book next time.

A REGULAR SH@T SHOW
Before buying I read the reviews on page one. Everyone was upset about the book having a cliff hanger, so I thought I will be prepared for that. I never made it to the end, had no desire to. Digging deeper into the reviews, where the Jakarta fans regulated the honest reviews by going unhelpful, I have discovered what a prepper is. There is no story here. Some have complained about taking a whole book to get to Boston. It is easy to see early on why. The father in the story is the expert on everything. He tells everyone what, how and when to do things. For example he tells his son, take the knife out of the outer left pocket and ... I believe we were also told where he bought the knife, it's shape and size, and what it is used for.
In the beginning they are in a sailboat and we are told everything about this boat. I thought, alright the author is showing off his knowledge on sailboats, when they get to land, surely it will improve. If anything it got worse. Every step is explained, literally every foot step.
I am not a fan of the narrator, but I am not sure he really had anything to work with.

Book 2 please!
The Perseid Collapse is the start to a great post-apocalyptic series. We join the fletcher family (and friends) a couple of years after the Jakarta Pandemic (if you haven’t read the book before this one it’s OK it’s helpful to get some background on who people are but certainly isn’t needed to enjoy this book) has passed and now are faced with a new issue (more on that a bit later). The book does a great job of mixing a bit of humor, lots of action and character development. The action scenes do a good job of keeping you on edge while keeping the action moving. There were a couple of nights where I had to pry myself away to go to bed. There are a couple of parts where the author goes into a bit too much detail of locations street names etc, but it’s nothing that takes away from the story nor does it go on too long to make any part boring.
Now for the issue that I have with the book, it resolves NOTHING!!! I’m sitting here wondering what happened to the kids? What’s up with Kate? I don’t even know for sure what caused all this. AHHHHH I have a problem with books that are part of a series that don’t stand on their own and leave you in a cliff hanger. The first book in the Author’s Black Flagged series is a perfect example of what I’m looking for, a book which resolves the issues and stands alone but allows for more to go on. This might be more of a personal preference but it drives me nuts. Either way I’ll be on the prowl for the next book when it comes out. I may complain a bit much about the cliff hanger but I really did enjoy this book and highly recommend it. Mr. Konkoly hurry up with number 2 please!!!

A survivalist's melodrama
There is a LOT of descriptive writing in this and NOT a lot of action. I really was looking forward to a good action story about an EMP assault. What I got was a lot of info on the details of backpacks, hiking through slime, navigating a tsunami, etc. etc. This was a potentially exciting storyline made boring, at least to me. But for those of a survivalist mentality, this may be just the ticket. You need the right mindset, though. Stacks of guns and ammo are required. Oh, and the Chinese are out to destroy us. You get the picture.

Good for its type
I enjoyed the differing scenarios.
Good storyline, too many characters towards the end, but closes with a cliff hanger.
