Publisher's summary

Welcome children of Earth, do not be afraid.

After a devastating car crash leaves her addicted to pain pills and her best friend dead, Meredith Gale has finally been pushed beyond her breaking point. Now, ending her life seems like the only way out, and that choice has left her dangling by her fingertips from a bridge high above the freezing water of the San Francisco Bay. But someone, or something, has other plans for Meredith. As her fingers slip from the cold steel of the bridge, a disembodied voice asks her a simple question: “Candidate 13: Do you wish to be saved?”

Realizing her mistake too late, Meredith screams “Yes!” and instantly finds herself transported to a mysterious island, alongside hundreds of other Candidates like her, each pulled from human history with seemingly little in common. But when Meredith stumbles across a cryptic message meant only for her, she uncovers an even bigger mystery - a mystery that places the fate of humanity’s future firmly in her hands.

With the help of her new companions, Meredith sets out on an impossible journey to find the one person who can solve the riddle of why they were brought to this strange, alien Earth...assuming they can survive the dangers that lurk within this new world and the dark forces massing against them.

Great reader, unsatisfying ending

This is one of those books that ends, not at the end of the story, but where the next book is supposed to start. I find that annoying.

Well worth a credit

There were points where I thought this was a self help book, then that went away and I just purely enjoyed this book. Ms Reading does a great job and while I was painting bar stools I actually sat down when the words "Sit down and shut up!" I needed a break anyway.
As all the good ones go, I did not like the end of book one as it ended too soon. 11 hours and 29 minutes can fly by.

Thank you Mr. Jones for this book and I look forward to the rest of them.

Rather predictable

Some good ideas hampered by ponderous writing. I wasn't sufficiently intrigued to purchase the next in the series.

Brain Candy

A highly entertaining read. I just have one small problem with the excellent narration. Kate Reading represents the voice of Kay Scarpetta in the Patricia Cornwell books. I have listened to her voice that character through many books, so I keep confusing the main character in this book with Kay Scarpetta. Kate Reading does such a good job on all the characters in this book, from robot voices to those speaking different languages from differing times. I thoroughly enjoyed the book in spite of the mix up in my brain of a character from another series.

Beware

To start this review I need to mention that I received my copy of this book free for a unbiased review, thus these are my true thoughts. Only read this book if you want to suffer sleepless nights and long bathroom breaks in order to continue listening. Once I started listening I could not put it down. I very rarely give 5 stars due to beliving everything could use improvement but this is an exception. I can only hope that the next book to come will be as promising as the first.

Intriguing idea a little predictable at times.

The idea is interesting, the characters satisfying and the story is well told. Some parts seemed awfully predictable. I will read the next installment when it comes out.

Great story - but a warning!

This is a great book for so many reasons: character development, unique storyline, great action sequences, and memorable locations. The voice acting was superb, and the story kept me very interested- to the point I was trying to sneak in a few minutes here and there to see what would happen next.

My only problem is that the book ended right as the bigger story was getting under way! This is the first book of a series, and the next book hasn’t been released yet. I hate that I can’t continue this story and need to choose another! My advice would be to wait until the entire series is released - unless you like extended cliffhangers.

Interesting premise, a little slow, a few flaws...

The premise of this book was an interesting one. People from all times and places find themselves together on a strange island after having met the moment of their death, and agreeing at the last second to the voice that asks them if they'd like to be saved. It kept my interest to about the halfwway point, but it dragged after that and was more than a bit slow. I’m not sure why... the author always had things happening, but I think it’s because the book just had too much dialog. That always slows things down for me, having to wade through long conversations back and forth. There were a few issues, too, with the author’s knowledge of certain things. Clearly he's never been salmon fishing before, as there's no way a woman can easily hoist four or five of them in a fish trap over her head. Nor do they have scales. There were a few other oddities and inconsistencies throughout that took me out of the story and made me scratch my head. All in all, I would listen to the second book in this series as it was enjoyable, but it’s not something that I would rave about with gushing enthusiasm. A solid 3 stars, if you like science fiction.
