Publisher's summary

A simple yet revolutionary approach to improving your body's oxygen use and increasing your health, weight loss, and sports performance - whether you're a recovering couch potato or an Ironman triathlon champion. With a foreword by New York Times best-selling author Dr. Joseph Mercola.

Achieve more with less effort: The secret to weight loss, fitness, and wellness lies in the most basic and most overlooked function of your body - how you breathe. One of the biggest obstacles to better health and fitness is a rarely identified problem: chronic overbreathing. We often take many more breaths than we need without realizing it, contributing to poor health and fitness, including a host of disorders, from anxiety and asthma to insomnia and heart problems.

In The Oxygen Advantage, the man who has trained over 5,000 people - including Olympic and professional athletes - in reduced breathing exercises now shares his scientifically validated techniques to help you breathe more efficiently. Patrick McKeown teaches you the fundamental relationship between oxygen and the body then gets you started with a body oxygen level test (BOLT) to determine how efficiently your body uses oxygen. He then shows you how to increase your BOLT score by using light breathing exercises and learning how to simulate high-altitude training, a technique used by Navy SEALs and professional athletes to help increase endurance, weight loss, and vital red blood cells to dramatically improve cardio fitness.

Following his program, even the most out-of-shape person (including those with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma) can climb stairs, run for a bus, or play soccer without gasping for air, and everyone can achieve:

  • Easy weight loss and weight maintenance
  • Improved sleep and energy
  • Increased concentration
  • Reduced breathlessness during exercise
  • Heightened athletic performance
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Elimination of asthmatic symptoms
  • And more

With The Oxygen Advantage, you can look better, feel better, and do more - it's as easy as breathing.

This is a must listen for everybody

The information in this book has to be heard by everybody. It was unknown to me that oxygen, and more importantly carbon dioxide, has such an influence on our life, ranging from appetite to orthodontics. The exercises in the book are well explained and can be started at any current level of fitness.

Excellent in every way!

One of the best Audiobooks I’ve read so far. Excellent narration, rich in educational context and effective techniques on their applications. I would highly recommend to anyone pursuing continuous wellness. Excellent techniques to manage anxiety and reduce/eliminate it’s secondary effects such as palpitations among others... The book has vast explanation on Anatomy and Physiology of our respiratory system and how we can integrate the suggested techniques in our daily lifestyle for overall wellbeing. A must read/hear!

Thought provoking and inspiring

I didn’t have high hopes for a book about oxygen but it had been recommended so I checked it out and the content blew me away. It changes the way you think about breathing and is based on fascinating science. Plus there’s a super practical guide full of exercises for you to improve your respiratory fitness by simulating high altitude training. Great stuff!

I learned a lot about breathing

I must admit I did not realize how important it is to breath through your nose and not your mouth. Also, intermittent episodes of hypoxia are good for you. Actually , I already knew the second part because I am Wim Hoff devotee. This book is an excellent read.

Brilliant yet could have been shorter

Fresh new perspective on breathing and it all makes sense. A must read for every one however as many others also have cited, it could have been way shorter. I have rated 4 stars only for too many repetition of the same concept otherwise the core material is excellent.

Long but worth it

Great information. A bit long but if you really get into the technical aspects it’s worth listening to all of it. If not, the beginning and summaries at the end will do just fine.

10/10 will read again + buy physical copy

This book is amazing in so many ways and can be life changing for so many people. Im definitely buying a physical copy of it to get a better look at the breathing exercises. But also, seeing the physical copy on my bookshelf will constantly remind me to breathe light and breathe right!

Real deal

This keystone habit will have a effect on every aspect of your life. I'm a major coffee drinker and have now been cutting back because McKeown is right about the effects of caffeine on our breathing. Surprisingly though, the breathing has me mentally alert so I haven't missed it much. I strongly endorse the sleeping tips provided. I have felt more refreshed in the morning to where I don't run to the coffee. Read this book!

Better Breathing

This book picks up where most material on controlled breathing leave off. Starting with the principles of Buteyko Breathing, McKeown expands on the theoretical premises as well as the practical application exercises of this controlled breathing method. He frequently points out the benefits gained by athletes and everyday people who have exercised this breathing system. From enhanced performance in various types of athletic endeavors to reduced requirements for asthma medication. Illustrated in a way that makes sense to the reader at any level.
