"The Overview Effect is an important book in helping people see that your attitude does change when you see the Earth from the space perspective - an experience that seems to be an almost universal phenomenon." - Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut, founder of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, founding member of the Overview Institute

"Space travel needs a new birth, and if we can tap into the desire to go into space, incredible things can come from it." - Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, which includes Virgin Galactic

More than 30 years ago, Frank White coined the term "overview effect", to describe the cognitive shift in awareness that results from the experience of viewing Earth from orbit or the moon. He found, that with great consistency, this experience profoundly affects space travelers' worldviews - their perceptions of themselves and our planet and our understanding of the future. White found that astronauts know from direct experience what the rest of us know only intellectually: We live on a planet that is like a natural spaceship moving through the universe at a high rate of speed. We are, in fact, the crew of "Spaceship Earth", as Buckminster Fuller described our world.

In The Overview Effect, Third Edition, Frank White expands on his original concept, which has now gained worldwide recognition and exposure. Using interviews with and writings by numerous astronauts and cosmonauts, he describes space exploration and settlement as necessary next steps in the evolution of human civilization and consciousness. The third edition features new interviews with the following astronauts, space advocates, and New Space entrepreneurs: Helen P. Sharman, Michael Lopez-Alegria, Sandra H. Magnus, John B. Herrington, Ron Garan, Akihiko Hoshide, Nicole Stott, Sir Richard Branson, George Whitesides, and Loretta Hidalgo Whitesides.

Frank White does a thorough job contemplating and explaining the potential benefits of expanding access to space and bringing humanity together under an organized effort to expand earth stewardship and space exploration. I feel he did not adequately address major barriers to these goals including international class and religious conflict, consolidation of resources that facilitate these goals, and cultural values of individualism over collectivism. Great read overall and delivers a sense of hope though.

Idealizing space exploration in an overall positive way

This book had a profound impact on the direction of my career in the space industry. With all of the astronaut interviews and Frank's thoughtful analysis of the meaning of it all, it helped me more clearly understand why we explore space in the first place. Skeptics, the curious, and the learned would all benefit by reading this book and it's look into the why and the future of space exploration.

At the core of why we should explore space

Very interesting analysis on how humans view our world once they’ve seen it from the outside. Few have had the opportunity to travel into space to gain this perspective (author included), but it’s interesting to hear how their thoughts changed after such an incredible experience.

The overview effect is a very interesting description of how a person’s notion of humanity can change once they’ve gained this insight, but it’s a little hard to believe the author couldn’t have gotten to the point a little sooner. The book is a little drawn out and the final third consists of interviews with former astronauts. A good read, but a little long for my taste.

Good, but could’ve been shorter

I was very excited to listen to this audiobook when I found it. The Overview Effect is something that I've always found interesting and inspiring. The performance felt very monotone and almost as if the narrator was a little sick. I almost think an artificial narrator might have worked better. The story felt very repetitive.

Was let down because so many of the first person accounts kept saying the Overview Effect was indescribable, which is what I came to this book to better understand. Feel like all the military and scientific people just weren't in touch with their emotions to be able to convey why it had such a profound effect on them.

This book did lead me to finding some cool and short YouTube videos that did a much better job of painting a picture so vivid that made me better understand the impact of the Overview Effect.

Would not recommend this title. Felt like a chore to finish.

Disappointing. Felt like an academic book.
