If we produce these emotions, it falls within our power to stop them. But we have to understand our part in them far better than we do, and that is what this remarkable book teaches.

The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

Knowing how to transform conflict is critical in both our personal and professional lives. Yet, by and large, we are terrible at it. The reason, says longtime mediator Chad Ford, is fear. When conflict comes, our instincts are to run or fight. To transform conflict, Ford says we need to turn toward the people we are in conflict with, put down our physical and emotional weapons, and really love them with the kind of love that leads us to treat others as fellow human beings, not as objects in our way.

Publisher's Summary
The Arbinger Institute has helped millions with their books Leadership and Self-Deception and The Anatomy of Peace. Their newest book, The Outward Mindset, reflects their latest research and experience and offers a new and intuitive way to teach people how to implement mindset change in themselves and scale it across organizations, with incredible effect.
One's mindset governs how one views the world, what one does, and how one does it. One's mindset can be self-focused, which Arbinger calls an inward mindset, or it can be inclusive of others, which Arbinger calls an outward mindset. It turns out that our own actions, and others responses to those actions, end up being dramatically different depending on which mindset we are operating from.
The Outward Mindset teaches listeners how to shift more fully to an outward mindset and how to help others, even whole organizations, to make that shift - a shift that sparks innovation, increases accountability, and transforms collaboration, engagement, and fulfillment.

Great Lessons to be learned and applied
I've now read three related but separate books by The Arbinger Institute - and all are very well-written (and well narrated on Audible), easy to understand and implement, and, in my opinion, important to put into action. Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box was the first I read, then The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict which actually is a prequel to the first but written after, and now The Outward Mindset ties it together and expands what the lessons are - treating people as people not things, not tasks, and for all of us to be present and to put yourself into their mindset.
Highly recommend this entire series for anyone who comes into contact with human beings regularly :)

Short and Sweet
Given that I had read the previous book, this carried on the narrative successfully along with some additional examples and anecdotes. The book can come across a little self-righteous so you have to be ready to be open-minded when listening, albeit I've found the methodologies to be most effective when intertwined with existing personality traits - so not to be a Stepford Wife. All-in-all, a good short book but without reading the prequel, it doesn't go into enough detail about its mantras.
