The acclaimed international best seller of the Tudor court, during the years of Henry VIII’s pursuit of Anne Boleyn – and the revolutionary sequence of events that followed.

1521. Young Mary Boleyn arrives at court, maid in waiting and favourite to Queen Katherine of Aragon. Yet Mary catches the eye of the capricious king and – propelled by the ambitions of the powerful Boleyn family – she betrays her queen, and takes her place as Henry VIII’s new mistress. But while Mary is in childbed, a rival comes to court – her sister Anne, a young woman ruthless in her drive to become queen. With her own destiny unknown, and the Boleyn enemies gathering, Mary must defy her family – and command her own fate. With an exclusive afterword written and read by Philippa Gregory, exploring the inspiration behind Mary’s story.

Critic Reviews

Praise for Philippa Gregory: "Gregory's research is impeccable which makes her imaginative fiction all the more convincing." (Daily Mail)

"Gregory is great at conjuring a Tudor film-set of gorgeous gowns and golden-lattered dining. She invokes some swoonsome images...while the politics are personal enough to remain pertinent." (Daily Telegraph)

"Subtle and exciting." (Daily Express)

Great book ruined by poor editing

I loved this book in print and was so excited to see that an unabridged version was soon to be released. However, this version is ruined by some incredibly poor editing. There are several points where words or phrases are repeated, for example. At one point there's three separate repeated phrases in just 2 minutes! This really ruined it for me to hear the same phrase repeated but in a slightly different tone of voice and really is something that should have been picked up before the audio book was released.

Wonderful - but needs an edit

Wonderful story and well read by Kirby - however, needs some editing for the repeated lines that litter the story.

A distraction in editing

Philippa Gregory's work is, as usual, superb here, but this audiobook suffers from - and I'm no expert in this so I can only guess - some sloppy editing. There are numerous repetitions of preceding phrases or half-sentences, which the narrator has expressed in a slightly different way or with different emphases that I can only imagine were not edited out before the book was issued. It doesn't seriously detract from the book itself, but there are a biggish number of times that these hiccups occur and it's slightly distracting. That's the only reason for my three stars.

The other Berlin girl

I love this book. Some fact some fiction. A healthy dose of make up your own mind. It did show how expendable girls are. Make them do your bidding reap your male rewards, throw the girl to the wolves. A big dose of unhealthy ambition at the cost of everyone else. But I got a real feel of how dangerous it was to live in Henry's court. The feel of menace and how you could never win. Because no one was going to speak out about the lies or they would be in trouble. Amazing what people can do and convince themselves is ok. Self preservation I spose. The narrator was brilliant. I have read the book but enjoyed being read to.
The title of my review is because when I ask Alexa to play book, she says "playing the other Berlin girl". Now I'm going to listen to what Alexa will call the Berlin inheritance!

Captivating

Honestly, you won’t be able to stop listening, hoovering, cooking, walking the dog it’s an addictive story, and Philippa Gregory a clever clever woman.
Oh and Vanessa Kirby an inspired reader, just a hop and a leap back in time from Princess Margaret.

Five stars despite its faults

I was recommended this book by a friend after a discussion on why women are so much better at writing about relationships and love scenes than men. I admit that as an author I have never quite ‘nailed it’ so this was a lesson from the best in the business, Philippa Gregory. The story stayed with me for many days after I had finished the book which is why I’m giving it five stars. That’s exactly what a classic book should do. It’s a rip-snorter of a story helped by the fact that it’s based one of the greatest love stories/ tragedies of all time. And because this is a work of historical fiction, Gregory is entitled to take one or two liberties with the truth. The problem with Philippa Gregory’s interpretation of events is that Anne Boleyn is a national treasure and we each own a little part of her. Every school child who is taught about Anne Boleyn cannot help but be inspired and then mortified by her unjust death. Philippa Gregory may well have stumbled upon the truth of her real character but she is portrayed as so narcissistic without any evidence that I found it almost offensive. Poor Anne and her brother suffered enough in real life without this blatant character assassination! There were other problems with the book. Too many characters were caricatures, especially poor George and I couldn’t relate to either of Mary’s husbands. The book also suffered from a saggy belly in the middle third when very little happened and the pace dropped to a slow plod. But overall Gregory describes Tudor court life like no other writer and her appreciation of history is excellent even if she does take too many liberties for the sake of a good read. I’m sure I will be a better writer after borrowing a few tips from PG and the last ten or so chapters were among the best I have ever read. A worthy ‘classic’ of a book.

Captivating story, wonderful performance

Captivating story, read beautifully by Vanessa Kirby. However, there were numerous lines re-read during the performance which should have been removed during editing.

A new favourite!

Fantastic read. Narration was great but needed better editing. Otherwise a sensational book if you enjoy historical novels.
