Publisher's summary

Set after the events of The Magic Engineer (and prior to The Magic of Recluce), The Order War illuminates great figures and major events in the historic war between order and chaos that is the central focus of the saga of Recluce.

The deadly White Wizards of Fairhaven, wielding the forces of chaos, have completed their great highway through the Westhorns and now threatened the ancient matriarchy of Sarronnyn, the last bastion of order in Candar. The ruler of Sarronnyn appeals to the Black order wizards of Recluce for help.

Justen - a young Black Engineer in the city of Nylan - joins the relief force. Despite their success in destroying more than half the White armies, Sarronnyn falls to the White Wizards, and Justen is chased into the most inhospitable desert in Candar. These trials are but the beginning, for the White Wizards have all Candar in their grasp. Justen must fight both Recluce and Fairhaven, as well as the highest powers of order and the forbidden technology to harness chaos itself in his efforts to halt the conquest of the chaos wizards.

Another great story in Recluse Saga!

L E Modesitt doesn't let fans down with this episode. Story moved a bit slow in some of the battle scenes, but that could just be my own preferences as a reader. As a metalsmith, I especially appreciate the scientific research that has gone into writing the story. Another great "read"!
I really appreciate the narration of Kirby Heybourne, too. I could listen to him read any book, really. His range of voices is spectacular, speed, cadence & overall performance is fantastic. A great experience all around.

The Grey Wizard

This book is a necessary piece of this world. Having said that, the book is a bit slower than some of the other ones. This particular book, however, adds so much depth to the world of Recluse that it is not to be missed.

War and devistation

Amazing battle scenes with crazy combinations of physics and magic. Not as heart wrenching as others in the series. Another peek into the world of Recluse. Narrator got too loud and too quiet.

My favorite so far

I really liked Justin as a protagonist and really liked the world building in this book. It could be a bit slow sometimes but it was definitely worth it.

If you liked the previous books you'll like this.

The reason you will like it is that the author keeps writing basically the same story over and over again. The only difference is tha the protagonist volunteers to leave and help rather tahn getting the boot like those in the other books so far. Still, the formula works and the author does a great job of it. So, it is just as satisfying as others in the series. Moreso, because I was very interested in the story of Justin and Gunner.

The narrarator does a good job and doesn't do as many sound effects which is good for me. Overall it is a satisfying, if a bit predictable read. The story (like the others) starts off pretty slow but rapidly picks up once the protagonist is off of recluse. It is definitely worth a credit.
