Publisher's summary

Audiobook five of the best-selling Eden's Gate series!

After the turmoil in the Arena, Gunnar retreats from Highcastle and attempts to maintain a low profile while the heat regarding Reborns subsides.

Avoiding the human cities, he sets out to unexplored lands with guild mates and a potential new recruit. But when his Great Beast goes missing, a simple quest turns into a troubling chain of events that spawns several unanswered questions.

Why is Sora unresponsive? And why are dragons threatening the inhabitants of Eden's Gate?

The king’s health may be postponing Dryden’s plans, but Gunnar’s saboteurs might have disturbed something that could be even more devastating than a Bloodletter invasion.

Can Gunnar mend the thin thread that’s holding the world from falling into chaos, and after more than a month in Eden’s Gate, will he finally cave to the temptations of an elf?

The main character is such an idiot!

I have rarely experienced a story where I can’t stand the main character (or most of the side characters) but I still want to know what happens next.
Dear author, please smarten up your characters!

getting tired of the MC

The MC is a dumbass and not in an endearing way and while the plot is moving along it doesn't feel like it is going anywhere.

MC goes brain dead to advance plot

The MC makes an incredibly stupid and out of character choice in order to advance the plot. This is likely the last book in this series I'll read.

Main characters stupidity getting old

I am considering not purchasing and continuing with this series because the main character is such a wimpy, whiny idiot. He doesn't think situations through and worries more about his pain when he is in a video game, rather than what is needed to take the smart actions that would improve his situations.

Want a story where the MC is BAMF, not this MC.

I've listened to plenty of books (including the other books of this series) and I have never wanted to reach through the pages of a book to slap the speech or outright strangle a MC. Gunner is a spineless idiot and continues to surprise me with his overwhelming stupidity and cowardice. when you're screaming for the MC to grow balls and routing for him to die your story is SHITE!!!

Gunner is really REALLY stupid.

I really like this series, but oh my god is Gunner stupid. Like, pants on head kind of stupid.

I don't really understand how, by book 5, he is this naive about basic concepts like a person's motivation, simple statements of phrase and intent, and other regular concepts that would be something easy to understand in the real world. Yet for some reason, he is absolutely clueless in this game setting, and it's utterly baffling. I mean, characters will make simple, common statements, and he will constantly, and repeatedly respond with "What do you mean? What's going on? What is happening?" Sometimes all in the same statement. I repeatedly let out an exasperated growl, and rolled my eyes while listening to this book, he was so obtuse.

Also, the author's idea of "gamer speak" is absolutely cringeworthy. Nobody speaks like that in real life. Why? Because it sounds stupid. And real humans actually understand that when they speak, which is why you never hear anyone actually speaking like that. So I find it utterly baffling that they would speak like that in the "game" world, simply because it's a game. It's still them in a real interaction, and talking like a normal person. But it's with this brain dead "for shizzle my nizzle! that's a whole snack!" crap, that sounds like an old guy who asked "So what are the kids saying these days with their internet slang?" And just did a google search or something for phrases, without actually considering context, or ironic usage.

The series is good, like I said, and the narrator is great, love him. But, I dunno, the writing has some painful components, that, after 5 books, are starting to seriously drag down the enjoyment of the series. Adding a second character (Jeremy) that behaves almost exactly like Aaron, definitely isn't helping either.

If you enjoyed the previous books, this is more of the same, and it's good. But if the parts that annoyed me, also annoy you, brace yourself because they are still there.

I really hate Gunner

I put the book down because the main character is so weak and stupid and makes terrible decisions throughout the book. I'm done with this series. The 2nd half of the book has just made me cringe the whole time.

Mildly enjoyable storyline that dissapoints.

its largely an enjoyable story but the blatant misoginy in the subtext just got too offensive for me to listen to and non existance of any queerness or diversity made me so bored. I hung on this long hoping the series would get better about it but it got worse. And the main character has no love for Rachel that he forgets exists half the time... all the elf tits im guessing... eugh bored.
