Great story and incredible narrator

Definitely worth listening too. The action is great. The narrator added so much to it.

Delightful!

This was a delightful listen via audiobook! It's simple narrative but beautifully written with interesting characters. I particularly liked the character of Rueben Manko (not sure how to spell it). The native American medicine man who uses the stereotypes of "Red Indians" to good use. So lovely to see a native American not portrayed as a caricature. It's not scary thank goodness and kept me engaged through the excellent narration, journey of the characters and the relationships between them.

I might could say I enjoyed this rightly

Lemme just say that Wellman has such a way eith characters that it is impossible to not know each of who these people are. Such great detail eith characters, telling who they are in such a fluid way that doesn't feel like a character sheet read off. Nicely done. Its a simple story but I still found myself really enjoying the journey.

Loved Stefan's performance here. I got a buddy from rural Alabama and has a habit of saying "Might Could" so I kept thinking of him each time i heard it said. This was a fun listen thanks to the writing and performance.

best I've heard in a long time

I don't know how I had not come across this book sooner, but it truly was a breath of fresh air.
Creepy in all the best possible ways, with threads of various folklore throughout, and wonderful down home colloquialisms of Appalachian America, and native American entertained.
If you've ever been in the woods, and felt that sudden, hair on the back of your neck rising up, and wondered what could be causing it, this will pleasantly feed on that fear and delve into the depths of "what if".

What a treasure

This is a wonderful blend of old Americana and Celtic mythology. It may take a little time for your ears to adapt to Appalachian dialect but it's worth it. Even though Audible indicates this is 1 of a series, it is a stand alone story and I haven't found a book 2. but there are more books by Manly Wade Wellman. I plan to read those too.

SLOW!!!!

I almost shut this off multiple times because the plot, dialogue and everything were so slow. It never really redeemed itself. Glad it was free.

Meh

The ending was good. The middle seems like it couldn't fully commit to a genre and it spent waaaay too much time on exposition. I think I might have enjoyed this in October if it has a different narrator and was 1/2 the length.

Speaking of narrator: I've enjoyed Rudnicki on several other books. He's a very good narrator but was the wrong pick for this book. This book was meant to be an oral tale with an Appalachian accent. His clean crisp speech was a terrible fit for the colloquialisms and mountain slang.
