Good Prose is an inspiring book about writing - about the creation of good prose - and the record of a warm and productive literary friendship. The story begins in 1973, in the offices of the Atlantic Monthly, in Boston, where a young freelance writer named Tracy Kidder came looking for an assignment. Richard Todd was the editor who encouraged him, and from that article grew a lifelong association. Before long, Kidder's The Soul of a New Machine, the first book the two worked on together, had won the Pulitzer Prize.

"Writing is structure,” William Goldman said, but too often aspiring writers plunge into their work without grasping this fundamental principle. Story structure is one of the most important concepts for a writer to understand - and ironically, one of the least frequently taught. In this book, New York Times best-selling author William Bernhardt explains the elements that make stories work, using examples spanning from Gilgamesh to The Hunger Games.

Lots of good information; hard to listen to
The author's ideas are good ones, and he goes into a great deal of useful detail. A beginning writer would definitely get a lot of valuable information about what it means to write a book from this title.
That said, if you told me that the narrator was a robot, I would totally believe you. He has a halting and over-articulated style that I found distracting.

Would you try another book from Bob Mayer and/or Martin Gollery?
I would buy a book by Bob Mayer. I would never buy another book narrated by Martin Gollery!
Who was your favorite character and why?
N/A
What didn’t you like about Martin Gollery’s performance?
His his narration was delivered in absolute monotone; I was unable to discern any modulation in his voice at all.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
N/a
Any additional comments?
The concepts outlined the book are great. However, the narrator is abysmal; his vocal appeal is nonexistent. This narrator's voice is reminiscent of a computer generated replication of the human voice. So how do I know the concepts presented in the book are great? I purchased the Kindle version so I could read it. Buy the book and skip this audio version.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Terrible narration, sounds like a robot- hated it. However, the content is so good it is worth dealing with.

Let's sound Human
Would you try another book from Bob Mayer and/or Martin Gollery?
I would listen to another book by Bob Mayer. The information about writing is very good and needed. I do not think I would listen to Martin Gollery. His voice was automated. I kept wonder if I was listening to a computer. If Martin is a real person I am sorry. But I heard Bob Mayer lecture on writing. It would have been better if he had done it himself.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Novel Writer's Toolkit: From Idea to Best-Seller?
The best part of this book is hearing that writing is hard work and takes time. Writers aspiring to be published don't always get the encouragement or hard facts they need to succeed. I wish I got this book 10 years ago.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Martin Gollery?
I would like to give Martin Gollery a second chance. I just not sure I want to pay for it or use my free credit.
Do you think The Novel Writer's Toolkit: From Idea to Best-Seller needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I wish it had an eBook
Any additional comments?
It need to be re-recorded. Writing is hard but worth it. Listening to this book is harder only because the voice makes everything inhuman.

Worst narrator ever!
I love this book and already have it in the printed version. For convenience i wanted to get the audio version, and i made the mistake of not listening to the sample beforehand.
First i thought that i had changed the speed of narration by mistake. I didn't. Then i thought that for some reason the opening credits were read by an automated voice. They weren't.
This narrator just has the flattest and most robotic voice of the universe. I deleted the audiobook and will take the time to read the print version again. (Which is a great book!)
