A man who nobody liked has been murdered...but who had a motive to kill?

1680, Leiden, The Netherlands

After a successful trip to England to secure the Princess Mary's hand in marriage to William of Orange, Master Mercurius is back at the University of Leiden.

And once more, he finds himself embroiled in a local mystery. A farmer named Wolf was stabbed to death outside his home, and his neighbor Jaco has been arrested for the murder.

But Jaco's wife Sara is convinced her husband is innocent, and Mercurius believes her.

As Mercurius gathers the facts, it soon becomes clear that Wolf was a deeply unpopular man. But is that enough of a motive for murder?

With the shadow of the noose looming over Jaco, Mercurius is running out of time to catch the killer and stop an innocent man from hanging in his stead.

I was so glad to see that there will be more books in this series! Brack writes in such a witty, sarcastic, intelligent style I couldn’t help but chuckle out loud several times. The story had me guessing right to the end.

Yet another brilliant installment

As always, Graham Brack has delivered a top notch, intriguing tale! Alex Wyndham's narration is butter to the ears and brings Master Mercurius's wit, sarcastic humour and intelligence to life. I've been counting down the days to this audiobook's release and am enraptured at my 1st listen to it. While I have all of the Master Mercurius series ebooks released to date and have read them all repeatedly, I find that the audiobook versions really make these addictive stories sing! Well done again Graham Brack!

Absolutely brilliant!

I love a mystery where the protagonist has a wonderfully dry sense of humor. I never fail to literally laugh out loud.

Another great tale by Master Brack

The humor and sarcasm of the first person narrator and a very good reader somewhat relieved the tedium of the plodding investigation. The novel was not nearly as good as the previous ones in the series.

An obvious solution made the investigation tedious listening.
