Publisher's summary

If you hear it, it’s too late.

In the shadow of Mount Hood, 16-year-old Tennant is checking rabbit traps with her eight-year-old sister Sophie when the girls are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building in intensity until it sounds like a deafening crescendo of screams. From out of nowhere, their father sweeps them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar. But the sound only gets worse....

Critic reviews

"This is a really entertaining thriller...like Michael Crichton (who might have written something very like this), Patterson and Barker keep ratcheting up the suspense and the sense of impending doom, until, by the end, we wish we could read faster just so we can find out what happens next.” (Booklist)

Very thought provoking story!

The performance was spot on and the story was riveting all the way to the very end. I really enjoyed the suspense and the storyline and got really involved with the main subjects and how they were different, yet together through the chaotic experience.
I wanted so bad for this to be resolved in a pleasant manner through the people who cared. What a fabulous read story by the narrator! Special book in my opinion because it goes deep in your consciousness. And you your other side of the mind. Still thinking about it all day after finishing.

Captivating story, full of action, twists, turns

I found the story very interesting. It starts slowly and gives you context and information sparingly. Pace quickens as you go along.

Ending was surprising but fits with story.

Great story, but a rather unlikable protagonist

I enjoyed the story very much, and believe it would have been one of my favorite James Patterson books had Martha not been so totally unlikable. Her behavior wouldn't last long in the real world, and it seems farfetched that she would be kept on in such an important assignment with all the outbursts, demanding of superiors, and hitting (or rushing) people she didn't agree with. She didn't seem to add much more than any other Dr. in her field could...perhaps less. I wonder if she was written by Patterson in the 10% of the book he wrote. That would make the most sense to me, since the story otherwise seemed to work together. All the other characters seemed to have a somewhat realistic approach to the roles written.

I look forward to discovering other books by J. D. Barker!

Patterson and Barker have created a thrilling read

Listened to "Noise" over 2 days. The use of science and medicine got me hooked. Vivid description of a variety of incidences and a believable plot of questionable decisions by the few who run our country enhanced this readers enjoyment.

Ponderable

Outside the Alex cross and women’s murder club books, this is one of the best written five Mr. Patterson. Of all of his books I have read, this one is the single most thought provoking story because it is not outside the realm of possibilities.

Great listen for Syfy fans

I actually enjoyed this book. After reading several bad reviews, I almost didn't get it. It isn't your typical James Patterson book, but that should've been obvious to everyone who read the abstract and saw that it was syfy. That is why I bought it, because I do like Syfy and dystopian/apocalyptic fiction. I recommend to all others who do as well.
