Story
Eleri wanted a different kind of case. She should have been careful what she wished for. When an odd human skeleton in Michigan’s Manistee-Huron National Forest triggers a NightShade investigation, Eleri and Donovan arrive to find it missing. But two other skeletons are a little too easily uncovered - each displays different anomalies that raise alarming questions. The bones aren’t from the area or probably even the continent. A decades-old abandoned building doesn’t register on satellite images. Files detailing genetic experiments on children are even more disturbing....

Story
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Broke and living in a one-bedroom apartment the size of a closet is not what you’d expect from an elite hunter like me. But hunting demons and half-breeds isn’t your average nine-to-five job with benefits. The hours are long and the pay usually sucks. I didn’t think I was going to make rent again until the Council, the group of angel-born who’d shunned me all those years ago, offered me a job - a paying one.I could either tell them to shove it, or take the job. So what’s a gal to do? Take the gig, of course.

The lure of the find behind the loose hearthstone at Hazleton House was too great. The schematic excited Evan, Reenie, and Ivy for different reasons, but it is Kayla who actually begins building it. Her ability to focus to the exclusion of all else is just one of the effects of her Asperger's. The scribbled initials, E. W., were merely a curiosity, until it's discovered they belong to Eli Whitney. But strange footprints and disturbing visitors let Evan know that the theft of his sister's prize schematic isn't just a coincidence.

Publisher's Summary
The NightShade Forensic Files: Book 1:
In NightShade, nothing is as it seems....
Eleri Eames didn't think she'd ever be allowed to work for the FBI again, so the special FBI division of NightShade seems like an amazing opportunity. But all too soon, her chance to start over starts to disturb her.
When the FBI offers Donovan a chance to leave his job as a medical examiner and try his hand at something new, he takes a chance on the NightShade division. Somehow, he has to try to escape from his shadows, but can he trust Eleri with the truth?
Thrown together on their first case, Eleri and Donovan must deal with a charismatic cult leader and his true-believers. The cult is mixed up with several decade-old kidnapping cases and the missing daughter of a prominent FBI Agent. As Eleri and Donovan dig deeper, they discover NightShade's mysteries aren't coincidence.
Their secrets will save them...or destroy them.

Solid, capable characters for the win.
I grabbed this on impulse as I serious needed something new to listen to: I'm very glad I did. Solid procedural tale underpinned by competent law enforcement personnel at multiple levels, local, State, and Federally. This part by itself being one of the reasons I do enjoyed the story; too often the trope of incompetence in law enforcement gets trotted out with only the heroes showing any real skill The possibly paranormal aspects are introduced slowly, and with a deft touch. The female lead agent isn't the "standard" ball-busting, manlier than Chuck Norris trope, either. The investigation believable, complete with believable time lines. I give this 5 across the board because it is such a solid storytelling with all the elements nicely balanced.

Boring narrator
The story is well done. The character development was good and I felt that I could see the characters, even like them. I liked the paranormal angle with more of a scientific eye. I'd read more by this author but the narrator was as flat as could be. There was no emotion or character in the telling of the story. It sounded like the reading of the minutes at a board meeting. He's not a bad reader but the lack of any emotion detracted from the storyline.

Very Special Agents!
An enthralling introduction to the series, Bill Murphy does a good job fleshing out the characters and enhancing the story. An intriguing twist on Werewolf lore with the focus predominantly on the science rather than the mythology. A good mix of supernatural and thriller with an engaging cast. I look forward to listening to more books by this author and narrator. I received this audiobook at my request and voluntarily leave this unbiased review.
