Publisher's summary

Bram Stoker kept secret a tale even more terrifying than Dracula.

It begins among the Carpathian peaks, when an intrepid explorer discovers a mysterious golden box. She brings it back with her to the foggy streets of Victorian London, unaware of its dangerous power…or that an evil beyond imagining has already taken root in the city.

Stoker, a successful theater manager but frustrated writer, is drawn into a deadly web spun by the wealthy founders of a mission house for the poor. Far from a safe haven, the mission harbors a dark and terrifying secret.

To save the souls of thousands, Stoker - aided by the explorer and a match girl grieving the loss of her child - must pursue an enemy as ancient as the Saharan sands where it originated. Their journey will take them through the city’s overgrown graveyards and rat-infested tunnels and even onto the maiden voyage of the world’s first “unsinkable” ship…

Truly exhilarating adventure back in time!!

My first step into the mind of Robert Masello has me clamoring for another of his adventures. The Night Crossing was a fantastic journey back in time to the late 1800s on into the turn of the century. I've read many fictional tales based on factual religious, scientific, and historical components and enjoyed them immensely. Masello has gone a step further by allowing you to encounter some of London's richly talented members of stage and print as they were as the 1800s came to an end and the 20th century was coming into its own. Masello's use of Bram Stoker as one of the story's protagonists allowed you to tag along with him in his personal and social circles at that period in time. That element provided a magically immersive backdrop to the adventure you went on with Bram and Mina. A chilling tale that literary lovers of fictional adventures that clash with the truth will likely enjoy as much as I did.

Relentless

You never know what will come of a fictional story with a real life protagonist. Fear not. Bram Stoker is perfect for this story.

The suspense IS relentless. From the early pages to the last pages the plot twists and turns become tornadic (I know, not a word), and settles back to simply (simply?) suspense.

Beginning in Romania and ending - of course - in London, the main female protagonist is a power unto herself. Bram comes to the story a bit later but in the midst of a drama - introducing the second plot and involving a second female protagonist - which can't be a subplot cause it stands alone, only connected to the other plot by a golden box.

Extended life, twice deaths, theater, graveyard, other creepiness, and the Titanic conspire to rivet you to the page (sorry - earpiece.) The use of the Titanic was disconcerting at first, but it did work.

If you like historical fiction, you'll find this opus uniquely suited to your taste. If historical fiction isn't your thing, read it for the mystery - which includes the supernatural. What else do you expect from a story about Bram Stoker? I'll reread this book a while after the nightmares end.

Ten out of five stars in my book.

I think I give five stars too easily because this book is far, far better than the last 5star book I listened to on Audible. I also loved the bits of true history woven into the fiction.

Bram Stoker, historical fiction

This nod to Stoker has thrills and chills, and it provides some really interesting facts about the real Stoker. In an age when vampires are everywhere, it’s too bad Stoker didn’t get to see his influence.

Good story

You’ll need to hang in with this one. It does get a bit tedious. And the shift to the Titanic throws you. But all in all an enjoyable read.

Great Story

I loved the characters and the story. The narrator really brought the characters to life. I will be looking for other books either by this author or with this narrator.

Fabulous

the historical references and the connections created by the author between fact and fiction never cease to draw me in when reading Robert Masello. The performance flows just right to align with the tempo of the book.
