In general, the civil service test has questions that are divided between basic general knowledge (e.g., English, math) and academics. For those applying for more specific jobs like with the FBI/CIA, some questions are based on the job.
Each question is multiple choice, and typically features some type of time limit. You'll also receive a question booklet or scratch paper, which you can use to work out problems to determine the correct answer. Tests can be quite long. You should expect your test to last about 3 hours and contain between 160- 200, based on the agency and the position you are applying for. Typically 85% of the questions are multiple choice but again, depending on the job position you are applying for, it may contain a few essay questions as well.
