Lia Setiawan has never really fit in. And when she wins a full ride to the prestigious Draycott Academy on a track scholarship, she's determined to make it work even though she's never felt more out of place.

But on her first day there she witnesses a girl being forcefully carried away by campus security. Her new schoolmates and teachers seem unfazed, but it leaves her unsure of what she's gotten herself into.

And as she uncovers the secrets of Draycott, complete with a corrupt teacher, a golden boy who isn't what he seems, and a blackmailer determined to get her thrown out, she's not sure if she can trust anyone...especially when the threats against her take a deadly turn.

I loved the story it was pretty easy to guess what was going to happen but good for an easy listening

I loved the story

Overly dramatic main character. Story was fine, if she’d been toned down a bit. Kinda got whiplash from her emotions. Could also have used translation for the few phrases in other languages.

Dramatic

It was literally okay. I figured out who it was pretty early on in the book. But it was okay.

Kinda Predictable

I like this author, but this book didn’t work for me. I didn’t much like the characters, and the story line was farfeched.

It’s ok

This book definitely kept me interested. I like the author, so that's why I chose this book. My complaint- the narrator. Very annoying voice. Nasally and whiny. I get it- it's supposed to be a teen girl, but...whoa. It's bad.

Good story

This book did something very peculiar to my brain. Imagine biting into a cupcake you think is vanilla, but inside it’s actually hot sauce and glitter—that’s how The New Girl feels. Sutanto lures you in with the promise of prep-school intrigue, whispers of popularity contests, and the kind of gossip that makes you feel like you’re eavesdropping in the cafeteria. But then—BAM!—plot twists keep flinging themselves at your face like dodgeballs in a middle-school gym class.

The characters are simultaneously lovable and terrifying, like if your best friend suddenly revealed they moonlight as a professional assassin who also scrapbooks. The pacing? Imagine a rollercoaster designed by someone who’s never actually seen a rollercoaster but has heard about them in fever dreams. That’s what we’re working with here.

Halfway through, I found myself suspicious of my dog, my neighbors, and the reflection in my coffee mug. Sutanto’s writing has that effect—it makes you trust nothing, not even your breakfast.

By the end, I wasn’t sure if I’d just read a YA thriller or accidentally joined a secret society that only communicates through plot twists. Either way, I can confirm: it was absolutely unhinged in the best possible way.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ out of five stars (the ✨ is for the chaos).

I love this author and I love this book! Even though it may seem like it’s for “younger” readers, ok so I’m in my late 40’s, it keeps you entertained & guessing until the end. Easy to listen to or read.
