Publisher's summary

For the audio book version, Dr. Warren Farrell personally rewrote the highlights of The Myth of Male Power as a dialogue. The questions are similar to what others will ask you when you discuss these issues. You’ll have Dr. Farrell’s best answers.

The Myth of Male Power helps each family member understand that genuine power is neither status nor money, but “control over one's life.” He documents that virtually every society that has survived has done so by persuading its sons to be disposable--whether in war or in work; and therefore indirectly as dads. And disposability is not power.

Considered the Bible of men's studies—yet highly empathetic to women (Dr. Farrell was repeatedly elected to the Board of the National Organization for Women in NYC)-- the meticulously researched The Myth of Male Power takes the listener on a captivating journey around the world, throughout history, biology, the Bible, the law, and everyday life, challenging every currently-held assumption about men, women and the family.

In his compassionate voice, Warren answers questions like, "Doesn't the fact that men earn more mean they have more power?" with "The road to high pay is a toll road—tolls such as working more hours, being away from our family, being engineers, not artists…." Farrell posits that men have mistakenly defined power as "feeling obligated to earn money someone else spends while he dies sooner."

To help each family member appreciate parents and grandparents, Farrell shares, "in the past, neither sex had genuine power; both sexes had roles: women's role: raise children; men's role: raise money. Our grandparents didn't preach rights--they preached responsibilities. Both moms and dads sacrificed so their children's lives would be better than theirs."

Dr. Farrell gives a 100% refund if this doesn’t generate one of your family’s most valuable discussions. See www.warrenfarrell.com.

the audio is not the book

While I enjoyed the perspective shared in the book and I think it's worth a listen, I was annoyed that the "audio book" was not actually the audio book but a 2.5 hour interview summation of the book. While I disagree with some of the conclusions he draws, for the most part it is a well explained, we'll thought out, and we'll researched analysis of the current state of gender politics. Although, I think it could go harder on the numerous ways feminism stands in opposition to changing the status quo when it comes to the myth and the ways feminism perpetuates gender roles of women's helplessness and victimhood all while claiming to be against such ideas.

I thought this was the full book.

What gives? This was just an interview. Is that what the book is? huh. Odd

A must read.... hear.

By far the most potentially transformative book of 2, maybe 3 generations. If we wish to save our society, and progress it, we need to heed the thoughts and insights in this book.

I really don't understand why feminists hate this guy. It is really a shame.

Kinda wish it was an actual reading of the book

Very interesting conversation. He describes these issues so well. Too bad no one will care. I wish I could share his optimism.

very balanced

I'm very much an antifeminist like the honey baggers. Warren Farrell clearly still has some affection for feminism making this book the perfect starting point for feminists who truly care about equality to learn what feminism doesn't teach.

This is definitely a repeat listen

-This is not what I expected, but it's still a welcome surprise.

-This isn't so much the actual book, but rather a guided dialogue between the author and an interviewer about the main points in the book, including all of the examples and kind of working its way through each section in a detailed manner but also leaving points up for further discussion.

-It's probably worth getting the physical book as well. To understand and remember more the points and examples given.

-I'll be keeping this book on my device to listen to a few times again at least.

eye-opening

Listened twice in a row! Great material! Audio compression could be a little better as I was constantly adjusting the volume regardless of traffic conditions/ car speed.
