Publisher's Summary

In the early 23rd century, one of very few ways to rise above your caste is to become a player in the extreme martial-arts game known as the Musashi Flex. Lazlo Mourn, a battle-scarred veteran, is ready to hang up his blades when his moves suddenly evolve toward a form of fighting unlike any the galaxy has seen.

Journalist Cayne Sola wants the big story on the games, and not even the fiercest warrior will stop her. Billionaire Ellis Mtumbo Shaw has everything except combat fame, but an untested drug puts that within his reach. Their fates will entwine - and be decided - in the bloody arena of the Flex.

Great fun, well worth listening

As much Martial Arts Adventure as Science Fiction, well narated and presented. Light, fast, entertaining, and a great way to spend a few hours.

An action packed novel.

What made the experience of listening to The Musashi Flex the most enjoyable?

I enjoy Steve Perry's novels. This is an action packed read. One interesting thing is this novel is the basis of several of his other novels within the same universe. They aren't exactly a series, just various one shot novels that are connected by an overarching story arch. My only regret is that the author started making more money doing licensed books such as aliens and really stopped coming up with his own material.

What did you like best about this story?

Lots of action and a good overall plot.

Did Joe Barrett do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

He did a so-so job of differentiating characters. He is passable but doesn't have a great range.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really, this is a fun quick read.

Any additional comments?

A great book. The narrarator is average, but doesn't ruin the story. I''d advise taking a look as Steve Perry is a good author who does great action series. It isn't on audio but everyone should read his novel "The Man Who Never Missed". Awsome stuff!

Old new purpose

30 yrs later and still purposeful, hope they put his older books on audio. Life is awesome and hard, but! Living it thoughtfully is a blessing. The public library has his books and they led me to audible.com🙂

Entertainning !

The book may be a little long but Steve Perry makes it worth the time if you got time. Even though it has some 'other world' jargon it's pretty easy to understand what is implied and for me the main character and simple storyline makes it a good listen. The only thing I didn't like was that the fight scenes didn't portray any pain or emotion when someone was fatally wounded.

Great story, great narrator

A Musashi Flex is a prequel to the Matador series it is simple story with a compelling world and convincing characters. The narrator had a fantastic delivery. If you enjoy space opera and combat I think you'll enjoy this book.

Great entertainment. Great performance.

One of the best books revolving around the martial arts and it's practitioners I have come across.

Full characters well fleshed out and clear, interactions plausible, settings and history/background well and elegantly described. The story moved along quickly and caught me up in it from the get-go.

Anyone into military scifi, the battles in spaceopera, even the one on one combat of epic fantasy will enjoy this immensely.

My thanks to Steve Perry for a great book, and to Joe Barret for distinct, interesting, well acted, and consistent characters.

Of note is the hero, and resident badass, is portrayed with a (passable - work on the "I", Joe) Southern accent which is as it should be.

An enjoyable listen.

A very simple, straight forward and well told story that I found quite enjoyable. It felt more like a short story rather than a full length novel, but that was alright with me. I just wish there were other Steve Perry, Matador Series novels available to sample. The guy has written so many, perhaps audible will acquire more.

The narrator was unknown to me, not that I'm familiar with every reader, but he did a great job as well.

It's alright...

The summary leads you, or at least lead me, to believe this was a story about the galaxies fiercest fighters duking it out. It's not.. It's about 2 separate couples falling in love and the guys happen to fight every now and then. Very little action with lots of filler. I fought MMA and trained Jiu Jitsu for over a decade so the fighting and "styles" are actually comedic. It's not terrible though, but I wouldn't consider getting the 2nd book if there was one.

Fine for a long commute or whatever

tl;dr: Good action, mediocre writing, over the top sex and violence. Probably on par with early drafts of the Spartacus tv show. Don’t feel bad if your mind wanders—you probably didn’t miss anything. Free is the right price for this one.

I’d recommend this for anyone who likes mindless action flicks or is ok not listening closely. The voice actor did a good job making characters distinct, so it was usually easy to tell who was talking when I started paying attention again.

Which is super helpful considering the number of times I stopped listening to unnecessarily long character exposition, unnecessarily specific listing of songs and composers (think Ready Player One), or unnecessarily graphic sex scenes—the ones I couldn’t skip past anyway. Not really the thing I want to listen to on the highway at 7am, but I’m not judging if you disagree.

The action scenes and descriptions of martial arts are definitely where this one shines. That’s where the couple of nuggets worth taking away can be found, too. Worth the slog through the exposition and endless abbreviations.

Decent book would like a follow up

This was the interesting book about martial arts. It's clear the author took his time to learn about martial arts practice. As a science fiction book it could have been a little stronger as the exploration of the different worlds in different ways that a future world would work where really explored. But for individuals that like interesting action and tournament based riding fighting This was really enjoyable.
