Publisher's summary

Survivors of an apocalypse take refuge in a mountain fortress and face enemies both living and undead in the first three books of this horror series.

Mountain Man: Ever since civilization collapsed in a wave of chaos and blood, Gus Berry has been waking up, getting drunk, and preparing for the day when “they” will come up the side of his mountain. But when Gus encounters another survivor while out scavenging for supplies, he realizes there are other threats on the post-apocalyptic horizon.

Safari: Living on the outskirts of a zombie-infested city, Gus has grown accustomed to the perils he faces on a daily basis. But now the zombies are disappearing, and a mysterious new threat is assembling—something even more relentless and terrifying than the roaming tides of dead flesh. And it’s preparing to hunt . . .

Hellifax: In a world overrun with zombies, Scott is hunting a remorseless killer who’s all too human. Following the murderer from Annapolis to the ice-glazed landscape of Halifax, Scott encounters half-frozen deadheads, infected vermin, and a few remaining survivors struggling to find safety. Welcome to Hellifax.

A break from the same old zombie fiction.

At first I found it hard to relate to Gus. After a few near death encounters, you really start to get the guy. Same with Scott. As you progress through the story, each character is developed nicely. Until you know the whole crowd pretty well. The good guys have it tough, but justice prevails...there are worse things than zombies in this book and they get what's coming to them.

I actually liked the main character

What did you love best about The Mountain Man Omnibus?

I liked this book series. The main character reminded me of an actual person vs some super zombie killer.

greatest zombie narrative i've heard.

The author speaks with with such fluidity and passion. The narrator is so great I want to fall asleep, but cannot because he is so engaging.

Lots of fun with an interesting twist to the genre

First let me say that when I see RC Bray as the narrator, I know I will get the best narration possible. He makes each character stand apart from the others and his voice submerges you into the story.

This collection is a bit different from other zombie books. First, it's set in Canada and that creates an entirely new feel for the environment and the cultural reactions of the characters. Secondly, the story starts two years after the world changed and the dead rose. The characters are accustomed to the circumstances and requirements for basic survival from page one. This means we get right to the heart of the story without any thing else clogging up the first few chapters. Then the author throws us loop and a twist that I haven't seen before in this genre. No spoilers, but he definitely raises the ick factor by ten fold!

The action is steady and makes logical sense as the story progresses. My one complaint is the obessesion with liquor page after page after page. The constant boozing and resulting foolish decisions began to really irritate me by the middle of book two. So much common sense before that and then the alcohol fused stupidity began to tear the story apart for me. However, book three takes a different turn and I was hooked again. Definitely worth the time.

Not for me

I wanted to like this book, I tried hard to. Bray is as always fantastic.

To be fair, I couldn't get in very far. I don't even know how far in I was before I returned it. The entirety of my experience was listening about the main character drinking. Perhaps a quick mention of his alcoholism would have been ok, but that's literally all it focused on from what I listened to. I actually was hoping he would die. Let's face it, it's the end of the world and a stiff drink is great but why does this waste of space survive? He is very unlikable and I can't continue a book when I feel nothing but contempt for the main character.

Fabulous...except book 3

Fabulous series, in general. Gus and his ridiculous binge drinking does get rather tiresome, especially after his 500th bottle of whiskey/rum/etc, but the excellent writing and cool storyline certainly makes up for it.

Most of book 3's focus on Scott's "mission" brings the story to a screeching halt. Scott is outrageously unintelligent and feebleminded. Terribly frustrating. His utter stupidity and inability to do anything properly, even after 2+ years into the plague, literally made me cringe. I skipped through many of his solo chapters in lieu of other interesting new characters and plots.

R.C. Bray does a phenomenal job with the narration. A++!!

Nevertheless, I would highly recommend this omnibus to anyone into well written "zombified" stories. Definitely beats the heck out of "The Walking Dead" for sure!!
