The Misconceived Conception of a Baby Named Jesus is an award winning religious satire; a fast-paced comedic re-imagining of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus with sensibilities similar to The Book of Mormon and Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

On a warm Galilean night, Mary and Joseph secretly rendezvous in the privacy of a secluded Nazarene garden where they get to know each other well. Very well. Nine months after their union, a series of events unfold that will forever define the meaning of the conception and birth of their child.

When Mary’s pious mother sees that her young unwed daughter is pregnant, she enlists the help of a pompous High Priest to devise a plan to characterize the pregnancy as divine, of God’s seed. Mary refuses to go along with her mother’s scheme, insisting that Joseph is the true father.

Joseph and Mary battle her parents for control of the birth narrative and the fate of their newborn baby. As word of a miraculous virgin birth spreads through Bethlehem, factions form and allegiances shift among unscrupulous shepherds, rakish Wise Men, members of the Magdalene family, an earnest but malodorous peasant, and an aging cat with a penchant for prophecy.

Is the baby named Jesus truly the Son of God or merely a mortal born of earthly parents?

The Misconceived Conception of a Baby Named Jesus was awarded First Place in the Humor and Satire Category of the Chanticleer International Book Awards, and is consistently ranked in the best-seller list in both the Satire and Religious Humor categories for the Kindle edition.

The Misconceived Conception of a Baby Named Jesus is a riotous and irreverent twist on a sacred origin story—equal parts blasphemous and brilliant. I found myself laughing out loud more times than I can count—easily the funniest book I’ve read in ages. If you’re on the fence about buying it: do it! You won’t (okay, might) regret it.

Though this is Burkland’s first novel, it reads like the work of a seasoned satirist. Overflowing with absurdity, biblical bloopers, and characters that could stumble out of a Monty Python sketch, this cheeky tale takes the ‘greatest story ever told’ and gleefully turns it on its head. Expect drunkards, slapstick-worthy misunderstandings, and enough groan-worthy puns to keep you smirking through the whole read. Not for the easily offended—but for the joyfully irreverent? A must.

Immaculately funny!

This book is the totally irreverent retelling of the original Christmas story. Using figures and places from the scriptures, Bill Burkland weaves an alternate story of an unwed teen trying to break away and her parent who are trying to grift off their daughter’s situation. Full of bawdy humor, it is riotously funny with witty dialogue and lots to ponder for those not wedded to a large cult. Which version is true? As the cat says “I could never quite remember”. The narration by Kevin E Green is heavenly. He gives an award-worthy performance of all the characters and brings the hilarious version of this story to life.

Religious satire at its finest!

In a hilarious satirical retelling of the birth of Christ, the story begins on a moonlit night in a hidden Nazareth garden. Mary and Joseph’s passionate tryst leaves them with a secret nine months in the making. When Mary’s scandalised mother and a self-important High Priest spin the pregnancy as a divine miracle, Mary fiercely insists Joseph is the father. As Bethlehem buzzes with rumours of a virgin birth, the couple wages war against family and clergy while shady shepherds, flirty Wise Men, and a prophetic cat choose sides. In the end, the fate of baby Jesus hangs on one outrageous question: heavenly PR stunt or earthly love child?

The author, Bill Burkland, weaves a tongue-in-cheek retelling of the birth of Christ. He brings to life a different retelling that emphasises the possibility of other reasons surrounding the “virgin birth.” He demonstrates how easily dividing and fractions can form and create different truths that soon become questionable. Each character is carefully developed to be less than the more popular, polished, pious characters. This different retelling is entertaining, more believable given fake news, and more relatable.

The narrator, Kevin E. Green, did a solid job of providing voices for each character that are unique and sound authentic. His method of delivery is smooth, pauses for greater punch, and draws the listener deeply into the life and times of Joseph and Mary!

It’s got satire that actually means something, blasphemy that still loves the story it’s roasting, and hands-down one of the funniest, most honest takes on the birth of Christ you will ever experience!
