Publisher's Summary

On May 13, 1846, the United States Congress declared war on Mexico. Although the Mexican-American War lasted only 18 months, its consequences were profound. Mexico lost nearly half of its territory to the United States: Texas, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. Some historians have described this conflict as America's first step toward empire. More ominously, this war first raised the issue of whether slavery should be permitted in the newly acquired territories, an issue that would help speed America toward the Civil War.

Shameful Depiction of Mexican Characters

The characterization of Mexicans throughout this performance accentuating a supposed Mexican pronunciation is tantamount to a blackface performance to depict African Americans. Shame on you!

Good history of the Mexican-American War.

An interesting historical telling.of an interesting and very formative but too often forgotten time period in America. Excellent narration by George C. Scott. who wouldn't love that, no matter the topic? all around, an enjoyable historical read.

More About Texas

This is almost entirely about the history of Texas rather than the war. This title should be renamed.

Interesting

It’s better to know a little about everything than not knowing anything about it. Thanks

Short but good

Short bit good. I enjoyed hearing the basic details we heard about in school… refreshed.

An abridgment, but a good one.

I don’t usually enjoy multi reader audiobooks, but this one works very well. George C Scott is the primary narrator, and while I thought it might sound like Patton reading the book, but does a very good, professorial job. The other actors portray historical figures for quotes, and generally do a good job of capturing the person’s background. Very recommended.

Mexican here...

The best is when the actors talk as Mexicans speaking English. Hilarious. Loved it. And no, I wasn't offended by it; As a Mexican I approve and endorse this book.

The content itself is great as well, of course.

Good overview of a largely unknown war

A well read account of the background to the Mexican American war as well as a brief outline of the war itself.
