Publisher's summary

The messianic prophecies of Jesus are one of the most discussed, yet often misunderstood, topics of the Bible. Join one of the world's leading scripture scholars in exploring this fascinating subject.

This nine-lecture audio series takes you on a gripping journey from the Age of the Prophets to the Babylonian Exile (587 BC) to the writing of the Dead Sea Scrolls during Jesus’ time. Along the way, you will explore essential passages in both the Old and New Testaments, shedding light on your understanding of Jesus as the Messiah.

What exactly does the word messianic mean? Under the guidance of Fr. Michael Guinan, OFM, you will dive into the biblical passages that address the concept of the Messiah, looking at the Davidic covenant and the promise of the "anointed king" in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the post-exilic prophets. You will also explore how the New Testament addresses Jesus as the fulfillment of these messianic prophecies.

After examining how early Christian texts addressed messianic meanings, you will look back over the road you've traveled to ask the most essential questions: In what sense can we say that the Old Testament "predicts" Jesus as messiah? And what does it mean to say that Jesus fulfills such promises?

If you love to explore scripture and faith, this course is for you.

Not Orthodox enough !!!

I picked this thinking it would help me improve my Bible study skills : instead all I got is modernist garbage !!! If you use this in a Catholic Bible study group they would think you have no faith . I don't know how they could call this a good resource for faith It an elitist cautious water down down approach to faith either Christ is who He says He is or He is not !

What was the point?

I had troubles grasping the point of this lecture series. I guess I expected an apologetic after reading William Lane Craig and this was definitely very weak compared to it. Maybe that's fault on my part for having expectations.

Basically, the author went through some of the messianic prophecies, said they don't really account for much and they are vague, can be explained in different ways, Jesus doesn't really fit them and he was on the fence himself in how to address them and basically this is a question of faith and not much can be derived from messianic prophecies.

What did I miss? Why even bother talking about them then? I need to find someone else who will explain this to me in a more enthusiastic way. Dull and boring delivery is something I can get through, not everyone who has something to say is an interesting speaker. But since the content was not interesting, it shined through as a drawback as well.

What?

Listened twice and still cannot find any informative value that would prevent my asking for a refund. Did no understand what the author was trying to say. Very poor at addressing the title of the book (If it addressed it at all is hard to know).. Anyone who gave this a positive review must be a friend of the author or on a totally different level than the average inquirer..

excellent scholarship

I have a master's in biblical studies so i can say this was a well presented argument academically and on a layman scale for interpretation of ot scriptures and their true meanings or original purposes. his conclusions are reasonable and his honesty on literal interpretations of scripture are a breath of fresh air.
