Publisher's Summary

Julianne Westcott was living the kind of life that other Protestant girls in prewar Liverpool could only dream about: old money, silk ball gowns, and prominent young men lining up to escort her. But when she learns of a blind-and-deaf brother, institutionalized since birth, the illusion of her perfect life and family shatters around her.

While visiting her brother in secret, Julianne meets and befriends Kyle McCarthy, an Irish Catholic groundskeeper studying to become a priest. Caught between her family's expectations, Kyle's devotion to the Church, and the intense new feelings that the forbidden courtship has awakened in her, Julianne must make a choice: uphold the life she's always known or follow the difficult path toward love.

But as war ripples through the world and the Blitz decimates England, a tragic accident forces Julianne to leave everything behind and forge a new life built on lies she's told to protect the ones she loves. Now, after 20 years of hiding from her past, the truth finds her - will she be brave enough to face it?

Loved this Story!

I loved this story. It has everything g a good love story needs. Fate, ambition, persistence and undeniable love! Kyle is every woman's dream minus the priesthood! I liked that it ended with her at the confessional and reuniting. Great job on the accents and characters...I saw them in my minds eye!

Loved it except for one thing...

This story kept me interested. I loved listening to it. The one complaint I have is that it’s hard to believe Julianne would’ve done what she did after her accident. The severity of her injuries may not have been conveyed adequately, and the decision didn’t seem thought through enough... it was just hard for me to believe her character would’ve made that choice knowing how much love they had for one another. The narrator did an excellent job, with the exception of all her male characters sounded like Kyle. Overall, I loved it and was eager to find pockets of time to listen.

The description is misleading

I enjoyed this book. But only until I accepted that the description of the plot does not fit the book. Is there a brother? Yes. But the story line has little - to nothing - to do with him. The story line (without giving anything away) is about a young privileged woman in England who falls in love with an Irish Catholic seminary student before the war. It is an interesting story and I enjoyed listening. But if you want the book because of the description, that is not what you are going to get.

Inaccurate social historically...but...its fiction

Meh, ok. I couldn't get past the inaccurate historical fiction. This is set in Liverpool, pre-WWII ) (then 20 yrs later) yet many of the social norms were totally set aside for the sake of the story. There were some plot holes that compounded the story also.

The insta-romance was just a wee bit forced but I could get past it.

So if you're an unfussy reader, this book is for you.

5-star narration for the great Fiona Hardingham - she's the main reason I chose this audiobook. I probably would have quit the novel much sooner had I not enjoyed Fiona's ability to sell a story.

Wonderful!

One of the best books I’ve listened to. True to England’s participation in war time.
