Story
A new era has dawned. The forces of humanity are crippled by the ever pressing threat of the Faie. War continues to tear apart the countryside, robbing those who remain of their last shreds of hope. While peace is only a distant dream for some, there exist the brave few who will stand and fight for what they believe in. Magic does not always mean death, and death does not always mean the end. Will love and loyalty prevail, or will those who strive for power and darkness put an end to innocence once and for all?

London, 1890. The city is ruled by the nobility and the Watch, or so it seems. When an underground organization pursues the alchemical formula to create a soul, bodies begin to pile up, and important figures begin to go missing. Masked men turn the gears of fate, pushing London into a new era where artificial life is only the beginning. Arhyen is the self-declared finest thief in London. The mission was simple. Steal a journal from Fairfax Breckinridge, one of the greatest alchemists of the time. He hadn't expected to find Fairfax himself, with a dagger in his back.

The Witch's Reign...a land of unnatural hellish cold ruled over by the Ice Witch herself, who is in turn guarded by three creatures - Wolf, Bear, and Raven. Those lovely beasts derive their power directly from their mistress and just happen to kill any who cross their paths. To get there, you first must pass through the Dragon's Ground. Full of, you guessed it, dragons who for the record, also do not like trespassers. Sounds like a fun place to go, doesn't it? Yeah, not so much.

There might be no rest for the wicked, but there’s no rest for the exhausted, either. We’ve barely survived one fight, and we have another blade at our throats. Strike that. Three blades. I can see only one possible chance at surviving the three evils we face, no matter how much I might hate it. I have to make my peace with one of them and pray that they will help me take down the other two, before we turn on each other.

We survived the land of the Witch’s Reign - that much is true. But our arrival home is far from welcome. My idiot brother has taken it upon himself to ride off in search of a mythical healer, someone who might help him walk again. Assuming she doesn’t eat him first. Because she’s a dragon and happens to reside in the deepest reaches of the Dragon’s Ground. Like I said, idiot. I’d go after him myself, but his leaving is not the only problem I face. My mentor has forbidden me to leave the safety of the Stockyards. Her reasoning? That I am too weak to weather the coming storms.

After a brief reunion with her companions, Finn is stolen away during the night by an unseen foe. Lost and alone, she must put her trust in a stranger if she hopes to reach Migris alive. Yet, nothing is as it seems, and those she trusts most may very well be the ones to betray her.

Horrible Narrator, speaks at different speeds.
Holly does not narrate as well as the first book’s narrator. She speaks too fast and then changes rhythm. I had to slow speed to .75 That dragged out some characters. This would have been much better if they kept the narrator of the first book. I truly enjoyed it. This version, not so much. I will make sure I don’t buy her narrative in the future. Sorry but true. Author is good, Who will check out more of her writing.

Awful narrator.
I will have to read the physical book, because for some reason the narrator is different than for the first book. I loved the first book’s narrator, especially for Finn, but this one is so different from the last one, it just doesn’t work for this story. It sounds like she has a southern drawl sometimes, and she talks so fast I checked to see if I had changed the speed on my app. Can’t listen anymore.

Expected More
This story is an enjoyable fantasy but it could use a little more depth into the various characters. I’ve gone through the second book now and I am just barely figuring who some of the characters and totally lost on each new city or town. I feel like I want to grasp onto these things but there is not enough substance to do that.
My main disgruntlement is with the performance. The performer in the first book was almost monotone, so I was glad to see there would be a switch in the second book. Unfortunately the first narrator got about a D and the second narrator only went up to a C.
This brings the stories to a level of a children’s series in many ways. I am just used to finding performances in all the other books I’ve listened to on audible as wonderful and completely forgetting the voice of the narrator and becoming totally engrossed in each character and the story as it unravels. Put more thought into who performs your books if you have any other books in the future.

Disappointed in this series.
Based on the ads for this series, I was really looking forward to listening to it. I am so disappointed. It sounded like such a great story idea. However I'm having a hard time getting through this one. The narrator is different than the first and does fairly well at the character voices but her narration is irritating. Also, the author throws in so many really unnecessary descriptive terms that I feel like I'm listening to something where word count and not quality was the goal. How many more words do I need to complete the assignment? Oh let me throw a few more in. And some of the dialogue stretches credibility. Finn gets offended that her private conversations were listened too. What the heck does she expect from con artists, cut throats and thieves? They are not really your BFFs. Good grief. And who cares and how do you know it's fresh butter with the food you are being fed by your realllllllly nice curly blond haired jailer with the sausage fingers who seems to genuinely like you? Oh I could go on and on. Very hard to listen to. I got through the first book of the series only mildly put off by the writing. This one is much worse. The characters are superficial and the dialogue is flip given you are supposed to believe they are in a life and death situation with dead bodies and gore showing up fairly regularly. Lots of unnecessary explaining and weird inner dialogue that doesn't fit the circumstances. It is very distracting from the actual story. Which is a shame because it has great potential.

Not bad
Could have compressed this 4 book series into just 2 books and would then be worth the credits. Not bad listen with interesting bits
