Did you know that not every passenger aboard the Mayflower was a Pilgrim?
In fact, of the 102 passengers on the Mayflower, only about 40 were fleeing England for religious reasons. And if you want to learn more fascinating facts about this cultural icon, pay attention....
The Reformation brought sweeping changes across Europe. In England, that led to the formation of a small congregation of radicals known as the Separatists. These were ordinary farmers and craftsmen who simply didn’t believe in the Anglican Church, and they found themselves hounded out of their own country like criminals.
So began their quest to find a new home - a home where they could be safe and free. A home where they could raise their children in peace. A home where they could practice their beliefs without fear of persecution. But in order to make that happen, the Pilgrims had to face many insurmountable obstacles.
The story of the Pilgrims is one of unimaginable odds. Somehow, they had to finance their voyage and then survive it. Finally, they would have to establish a colony in uncharted territory and find a way to make peace with its inhabitants, who were by no means happy to have their homes invaded.
There are so many things to learn about the Mayflower’s voyage, and just a few of them include:
- The personalities of the fascinating individuals who crossed the Atlantic aboard the Mayflower
- The changes in Europe that led to the Pilgrims’ voyage
- Where the Pilgrims fled to before boarding the Mayflower
- How the Pilgrims financed their voyage
- How conflict grew between the Saints and Strangers aboard the Mayflower
- Why the Pilgrims didn’t land at the mouth of the Hudson River as they had planned
- How the Mayflower Compact became the world’s first attempt at democracy

Unprecedented times call for unprecedented measures. That certainly strikes a vibe today. Those involved on the Mayflower were able to see through uncertainty, collect their thoughts, and strike up a new form of government that would cover their bases. Today we forget to look back on such things at The Mayflower Compact and pause on them. There's much meat to digest, and many lessons to be learned, if history is heeded to instead of being erased.
Details on the ships themselves was fascinating. I knew all about the Speedwell and return visits causing delays to the initial journey. What I didn't know were the extra details on the Mayflower itself and what impacted it's strength for the voyage it was undertaking. I shall leave specifics out here as not to spoil it for the listener. I did chuckle a bit at the quite handy tool that happened to be on board to save the day. I resonated with that because my family is quite the hobbyists and we enjoy the right tool for the right job and have plenty of tools handy. I could relate to that person who tucked that device away in their belongings!
The narration was nice. I do feel in the beginning the back stories were a bit choppy. Receiving so much info on that many people called for a more intent listen. It didn't flow as smoothly as the rest of the story. If I had a book in hand I would have been able to slow down and process those connections better.
Overall this was an enjoyable listen with nice insight into the many lives and cultures that were impacted by this journey.
Such a thought provoking journey!
