Publisher's summary

When a British businessman and his family are killed in Japan by a virulent form of West Nile disease, James Bond suspects a mass assassination. Investigating with the help of beautiful Japanese agent Reiko Tamura and his old friend, Tiger Tanaka, Bond searches for the killers and the one surviving daughter, Mayumi.

Bond's discoveries lead him to believe that two powerful factions controlled by the mysterious terrorist Goro Yoshida are playing God. Between them they have created the perfect weapon, one small and seemingly insignificant enough to strike anywhere, unnoticed.

With an emergency G8 summit meeting just days away, Bond has his work cut out for him discovering when - and how - the next attack will occur. It's a race against time as Bond confronts both man and nature in a desperate bid to stop the release of a deadly virus that could destroy the Western world.

Entertaining but lacks sharpness

This is an entertaining Bond novel; however, the writing lacks immediacy and sharpness. Many of the sentences are loose and over written, rather than being tight and economic. The plot was well constructed, and Benson handled the tension in the small archs as well as the long linear one masterfully. As to the Audible, Simon Vance’s performance is well suited to the Bond character and the story. Listening to the recording while reading the novel does lend a pleasant appreciation to the characters, dialogue, and story altogether.

License to Bore...

I want to first commend Raymond Benson on having the guts to attempt to capture 007, it's by no means an easy job. In his run of 007 he spends a little too much time explaining the geography and the customs of Japan rather than focusing on the storyline at hand. I'm sure other people will disagree with me and that's ok but this Bond novel felt rushed. I really had trouble finishing this.
